Will the Deportivo La Coruna Football Shirt Still Be a Part of La Liga Next Year?

It’s a question that’s asked every time a football club is promoted from the Segunda Division to the big leagues of La Liga: will this team still be here this time next year? Indeed, the top objective for any club promoted to La Liga is not usually to win the division, but to play well enough to avoid being relegated back to the second rung of Spanish soccer. Such is the case this year for Deportivo La Coruna, and if you’re wondering whether or not you’ll be seeing the Deportivo La Coruna football shirt in La Liga next year, you’re not alone.

At Soccer Box, we currently have a range of Deportivo La Coruna jerseys available, from the team’s blue and white home jersey to the Deportivo black and red away kit. From Relegation to Promotion: Deportiva La Coruna’s Recent History

More than perhaps any other club, Deportiva La Coruna has spent most of its history bouncing back and forth between the first and second divisions of Spanish soccer. This ongoing struggle dates all the way back to the 1940s. Only twice has Deportivo dipped down into lower divisions, and on both occasions, the team was back in Segunda Division after a single season.

Deportivo La Coruna’s longest period of success came in the 1990s and 2000s. In the 1990 – 1991 season, Deportivo was promoted to La Liga after coming in second place in the Segunda Division. What followed were 20 back-to-back seasons in La Liga, without a single relegation.

From 1999 to 2004, the Deportivo La Coruna football shirt even made it onto the La Liga podium. The 1999 – 2000 season actually saw Deportivo beating the likes of Barcelona and Valencia to the top of the La Liga table. It was Deportivo’s first (and thus far, only) Spanish national championship soccer title, though the club would also finish in the top three during each of the following four seasons.

After the 2003 – 2004 season, though, Deportivo La Coruna seemed to slip out of its golden age and began dropping further and further down the La Liga table. An 18th place finish in 2010 – 2011 saw the team relegated to the Segunda Division for the first time in 20 years. Deportivo has since been promoted back to La Liga twice, most recently with a second place finish in last season’s Segunda Division.

The Current Season

Unfortunately for fans of the Deportivo La Coruna third jersey 2014 – 2015, this season’s Deportivo squad has been performing more like the late 2000s version of the team, and less like the late 90s or early 2000s incarnation.

Deportivo’s current record—of 1 win, 1 draw, and 3 losses—is not the worst in La Liga this season. Currently, Deportivo La Coruna is in 14th place on the league table, out of 20 teams. So if the season ended today, Deportivo La Coruna would not be relegated.

Still, Deportivo will need to ramp up its level of play if the Deportivo La Coruna football shirt is to make an appearance in next year’s La Liga. The only team that the club has beaten so far, Elbar, was another promoted club from the 2013 – 2014 Segunda Division.

Luckily, Deportivo’s players have mostly held their own against opponents this season. Aside from a crushing at-home loss against Real Madrid—where Cristiano Ronaldo ran rampant over the Deportivo defense, scoring three goals en route to an 8-2 win—Deportivo has not lost a single match this season by more than one point.

With narrow 2-1 losses against Celta de Vigo and Granada—not to mention an even more contentious 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano—it’s clear that Deportivo has reasonably solid defensive and offensive capabilities. Perhaps the team merely needed to acclimate to the challenges of La Liga.

Or perhaps they simply need a bit more fan support? If you’ve been looking to root for an underdog this season, why not pick up a Deportivo La Coruna third jersey 2014 – 2015 and support Deportivo La Coruna? The club has an interesting narrative, a great jersey, and plenty of potential to do great things.
