Italy Football Jerseys Down But are they Out?

Group D was always going to be tough, the group includes 3 of the 8 previous World Cup winning nations, England, Italy and Uruguay. With 4 previous World Cup wins, and certainly the most recent in 2006 the Italy football jerseys were the most feared of the group going into the tournament.  Uruguay last won the World Cup in 1950, England in 1966.

The 4th team was wildcard Costa Rica and wildcard they have proven themselves to be. Costa Rica is the 1st team in the group to secure a place in the next stage after strong wins against both Uruguay and Italy. Tonight’s Italy versus Uruguay match was pivotal for both teams. Would the Uruguay 2014 World Cup away shirt or the Italy soccer jerseys proceed to the next stage alongside Costa Rica?

So far the 2014 FIFA World Cup has thrown up its fair share of mayhem and shock results. World Cup holder Spain is going home, Brazil isn’t playing with the expected vigor and enthusiasm, and Costa Rica has stormed 3 higher ranked teams to secure a place in the knockout stage after only 2 games. At Soccer Box we still have stock of the Italy football jerseys and many other team kits including Germany, Argentina and of course Uruguay. The Road to the Last 16

Italy had a tough 1st match; the difficulties were not necessarily the opponent but the location, the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus. The heat and humidity was expected to stifle both teams, and Italy certainly didn’t play at it’s best. However, against an even weaker English side the Italians managed a 2-1 win.

Their 2nd game against Costa Rica certainly didn’t go to plan. Costa Rica’s 28th place FIFA Ranking against Italy’s 9th indicated an easy 3 points, however, at full time the score was 1-0 against Italy.

Uruguay met the unlikely might of Costa Rica in their 1st World Cup match losing 3-1. Their 1st game was without star player Luis Suarez, who made his presence felt in match number 2 against England. Suarez scored twice to secure the win and 3 points.

With both Italy and Uruguay winning their games against England they had 3 points a-piece. Before kickoff Italy was holding 2nd spot based on goal difference alone. A win or draw for the Italy home shirt would suffice, but the 1st outing of the Uruguay 2014 World Cup away shirt was of win or go home importance.

An Early Knockout Game

The first half was somewhat disappointing given the importance of the match for advancement to the knockout stage. Balotelli and Suarez were both prone to underhand tackles and dramatics leading to a high number of fouls and free kicks for both sides. Balotelli received a yellow card at 22 minutes meaning he will miss the next game if Italy can hold on and advance to the Round of 16.

The lack of excitement resulted in the players being booed off the pitch at the halftime whistle, the score remaining 0-0.  During halftime Balotelli was substituted for Marco Parolo. The number 14 shirt of Nicolas Loderio also replaced the number 16 Uruguay 2014 World Cup away shirt of Pereira. With both sides making substitutions the fans were hoping for a more explosive 2nd half and a decisive win for their favorite team.

Except for the sending off of Italy player Marchisio on the 59th minute, the first 35 minutes of the 2nd half were as uneventful as the 1st half. The Italians seemed content with a draw and the Uruguayans struggled to penetrate their defenses. However, on the 80th minute Suarez appeared to bite Italy player Chiellini, the incident went unseen by the referee and while the Italians were still remonstrating Godin hit the net putting Uruguay ahead.

It is likely that the Suarez incident will be debated and further looked into over the coming hours, days and possibly weeks however the Godin goal stands and the Italy football jerseys will play no further part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Costa Rica secured a draw against England ensuring they finished top of the group, leaving Uruguay in 2nd place. Uruguay will play the 1st place team in Group C on the 28th June. The Group C games will be played later this evening but as it stands the most likely outcome will be a Uruguay versus Columbia knockout stage tie.

The Italy football jerseys may not be taking no further part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup but it is certain they will regroup and come back stronger in the Euro 2016 qualifying games that are due to start in September.
