New Zealand Football Shirts Will Not Appear at the 2014 FIFA World Cup!
The national football team of New Zealand was hoping to repeat its success of 2010 and secure qualification for this summer’s 2014 FIFA World Cup. New Zealand is in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). New Zealand has only qualified on 2 previous occasions. No team wanted to miss the opportunity of playing in a World Cup being held in Brazil, however it was not to be for the team that wears the New Zealand football shirts.
Nike is the manufacturer of the New Zealand football shirts. The team may not be playing on the world’s biggest football stage in Brasil however; you can show your support and shop for a shirt at Soccer Box now. The traditional colors of New Zealand are black as is well known in the countries rugby kit. However, due to previous FIFA regulations the New Zealand soccer team was not allowed an all black kit.
Despite a change in FIFA regulations now allowing black soccer kits the New Zealand squad has firmly established themselves as the All Whites. The home kit is an all white design featuring a white shirt, shorts and socks. This clever play on the famous rugby All Blacks has become synonymous with the team. The latest New Zealand home jersey 2014 – 2015 is all white and fantastic.
Recently Nike has launched the New Zealand home jersey 2014 – 2015. True to style it is a simple all white shirt. The classic rounded neckline and short sleeves provide a sporty finish. Designed by Nike the famous Swoosh trademark sits on the chest alongside the New Zealand crest, both are embroidered in grey. The team would have been hoping to showcase this jersey at the World Cup; it will now be used for the OFC Nations Cup.
The OFC is the smallest of the FIFA Continental Zones and was only allocated a maximum of 1 qualifying spot in the World Cup finals. The winning team of the OFC qualifying process would play in an intercontinental play-off against the 4th runner up of the CONCACAF zone. The team wearing the New Zealand football shirts was strong throughout the OFC qualifying campaign, and was favorites to progress following their successful qualification in 2010.
The World Cup is held every 4 years; the last time was in 2010 when the tournament was hosted by South Africa. New Zealand has had little success in the world’s biggest soccer competition, and has only qualified twice in 1982 and 2010. They would have been hoping to qualify and build on their previous success by advancing beyond the group stages. Their chances looked promising when they won the OFC qualification process.
Unfortunately winning the OFC qualification tournament was not enough to guarantee a trip to Brasil. The final hurdle was the intercontinental play-off. The play-off was a 2-legged match against the 4th team from the CONCACAF group; this was Mexico. If the team could beat the Mexicans the New Zealand football shirts would be making their 3rd ever World Cup appearance.
The 2 play-off soccer matches were played on the 13th and 20th November 2013. The 1st match was played in Mexico. The Mexicans dominated the game that was played at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The team wearing the New Zealand football shirts struggled from kick-off, and they were 2-0 down by halftime. 5 yellow cards were issue to the strained New Zealand squad. The game finished 5-1 with much to do in the home leg if the team was to secure qualification.
The return leg was played at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. Peralta put the Mexicans ahead after only 14 minutes signaling the theme of the match. Not content with their 4-goal lead the Mexicans were taking no chances in ensuring that they would take part in Brazil. The New Zealand team managed to score 2 goals in the closing minutes to give an aggregate score of 9-3, and end all hopes of the New Zealand home jersey 2014 – 2015 making an appearance in Brasil.
Despite the teams lack of World Cup soccer the New Zealand football shirts are a great choice. They have won the OFC Nations Cup on 4 occasions and will start the next tournament as the favorite choice. Wear the shirt and cheer on the team during every game. Get yours now!
