From the 2016/17 football season the Belgian Pro League has been renamed to the Jupiler Pro League. The Belgian football league is conducted differently to other leagues in European football and operates a play-off system following regular season play. There are 16 teams that each play one-another twice. Following this the top 6 teams compete in play-off 1 for the top spot, and the other teams compete in play-off 2 with the aim of avoiding last place and relegation.
The Belgian Pro League was founded in 1895 with the 1970’s-1990’s being the leagues most successful period in European football, with several trophies in European competition and high-ranking finishes in the European Cup (Champions League).

These revenues are boosting the ability of clubs to buy players, however, the figures are not large enough to compare or compete with other leagues at the present time.
The Pro League offers excellent football for fans and as the league develops there is more young talent filtering through. Eden Hazard a Belgian national began his career aged just 4, but lack of facilities for youth development in Belgium meant a move to a French football club at age 14. However, in recent years youth football has moved on significantly and this can be seen clearly through the progress of the Belgian national team and their 2nd place FIFA Ranking as of August 2016.
