Traditional Colours of AS Roma
The history and home colours of AS Roma are deeply intertwined. Roma was formed by the merger of three clubs in 1927, and the now iconic imperial purple and golden yellow scheme was worn by one of those clubs; Roman football club. The purple and yellow are actually reflective of the official City of Rome and the seal of the Comune di Roma.
Throughout the years the Roma home jersey has maintained the purple and yellow colour scheme. Variations in the shade of purple, vying more toward a deep red at times, and brighter shades of yellow have featured in shirt designs. However, for the 2017/18 football season Nike re-worked the crest and colour scheme to return them closer to the original shades.
White Roma home shorts, and black football socks are the traditional accompaniments to the iconic shirt. However, in recent seasons more variation has been trialled; some examples are purple socks in 2014 and 2015, purple shorts in 2016 and 2017/18, and even yellow socks for the 2016/17 campaign.
Home of AS Roma
A club’s football stadium is its home, an icon and a place of gathering for supporters. Since its inception Roma has used four different grounds:
1927-28: Motovelodromo Appio
1929-40: Campo Testaccio
1940-53: Stadio Nazionale del PNF
1953- present: Stadio Olimpico
The Stadio Olimpico is a shared football ground, as is quite common in Serie A, and Roma share the facility with league rivals Lazio. The stadium first opened in 1937, and was renovated in 1953 prior to the arrival of AS Roma, it was again renovated ahead of the 1990 World Cup that was hosted in Italy. The stadium has a capacity of 70,634, and is a sea of the purple and yellow Roma home shirt when the squad is playing there.
Since 2012 there has been a proposal for a new Roma stadium, however, planning and design issues have delayed the plan to date. In summer 2017 Roma agreed a new deal with the Stadio Olimpico until 2020, and there is currently no firm schedule for the new ground.
