Celta de Vigo has never won the title of Spanish Champions. They have spent the majority of their history in the top-flight La Liga, with several dips into the second tier Segunda Division, most recently from 2007-2012. Since securing promotion in 2012 Celta de Vigo has gone from strength to strength improving their finishing position each season.
Celta Vigo’s highest place La Liga finish to date is 4th, which they secured in 1948 and 2003. Similarly the club has never won a Copa del Rey title, but they did finish as runner-up on three occasions; 1948, 1994 and 2001. Their biggest achievements to date are winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000, and two Galician Cup titles in 2007 and 2008.
Celta de Vigo Kit History
When the club was first founded the Celta Vigo squad wore a red home shirt, with black shorts and blue football socks. The exact year when they changed to their current colour scheme is unknown. However, the sky blue and white colours of the Celta de Vigo home shirt are now iconic, and representative of the club as well as the Galician region.
In today’s modern football culture with increasing and ever-changing sponsorship deals Celta Vigo is almost a rarity. From 1985 to 2016 French car manufacturer Citroen was the clubs primary sponsor. However, in a shock announcement the club and company have parted, with the 2016/17 jerseys launched with no official sponsor.
Likewise, with the manufacturer of the clubs football kits Celta de Vigo was in a long-term partnership with Umbro from 1986-2010. German sportswear brand Adidas took over in 2013 in a four-year deal. Controversially, Adidas has modernized the look of the Celta Vigo football shirts introducing royal blue and yellow accents to the latest incarnation of the home jersey.
Could these changes indicate a turn of fortunes for Celta de Vigo, can they compete with the ‘big 3’ of the Spanish La Liga and secure their best ever league finish in the upcoming seasons?
The home of Celta Vigo is the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos. This football stadium is based in Vigo and has been the clubs home ground since 1928. It has been renovated on multiple occasions and now has a capacity of 29,000 football fans.
