Samuel Eto’o is a striker for Chelsea and Cameroon. The renowned international is most well-known for his time with Barcelona, where he scored more than 100 goals in five seasons and became the record holder for the most appearances by an African player in La Liga. Due to his time in Spain Eto’o classes as a Spanish citizen and is not counted amongst foreign players playing in the European Union.

Eto’o, full name Samuel Eto’o Fils, was born on March 10th, 1981 in Douala, Cameroon. His early talents were spotted and he went in to the local Kadji Sports Academy before being scouted and signed by Real Madrid. Due to his age he was placed in the reserve team but following their relegation was forced out on loan, where struggled to find game time. His final loan, to Mallorca, resulted in six goals in 19 appearances – enough to warrant a record transfer to the club in the year 2000.

It was at this point that Eto’o, with the Cameroon national team, won the 2000 Olympic football tournament, before returning to Mallorca. There the clinical striker spent four seasons, scoring 48 goals in 120 appearances and gained countless plaudits, attracting the attentions of his next club – Barcelona.

Eto’o is the most decorated African player of all time. He was the first ever player to win two European continental trebles in a row in 2010, following his move from Barcelona to Serie A giants Inter Milan. He  is the second ever player to have scored in two separate Champions League finals, and only the fourth to have won the Champions League two years in a row with different teams.

The forward has won the African Player of the Year a record four times and came third for the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2005. Eto’o has attended three World Cups, six Africa Cup of Nations (winning twice), and is the all-time top scorer in the Africa Cup of Nation with 18 goals. To date he is Cameroon’s all-time leading scorer with 55 goals and their third most capped player on 112 caps.

This summer Eto’o will be hoping to go to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil to represent Cameroon for what will probably be the last time at the age of 33. The team, affectionately known as Les Lions Indomptables, will face a difficult task to progress against Mexico, Croatia, and hosts Brazil.
