On Sunday, May 24th, AC Milan lost 2-3 in an away fixture against Sassuolo, nearly tumbling out of the Serie A top 10. The match was representative of everything that has been wrong with the Red and Blacks this year, from failing to play effective defense, to losing throwaway fixtures that-a few years ago, at least-they could have won in their sleep. The question is, what happened? Why did the AC Milan football club lose their mojo? Can they find it again? And ultimately what are the AC Milan Serie A 2015 - 2016 prospects?
If you are like most Red and Blacks fans, then you are already eager to forget about the 2014 2015 season and to start thinking instead about next year's 2015 2016 campaign. The promise of redemption is (hopefully) waiting somewhere off on the horizon, and Soccer Box can help you hope for it, with a brand new AC Milan home jersey 2015 2016! The 2014 2015 Season: What Went Wrong?
Before we can start hoping for AC Milan to turn things around and rebuild their legacy, we need to understand precisely what has gone wrong with the soccer club-not just in 2014 2015, but last season as well.
Looking at recent AC Milan statistics, there is no doubt that the Red and Blacks would still be considered among Italy's best football clubs. In 2011, they won the Serie A title and reached the round of 16 of the Champions League; in 2012, they were Serie A runners-up, won the Supercoppa Italia, and competed in the quarterfinals of the UCL; and in 2013, they finished in third place in the domestic league and reached the round of 16 in the Champions League once again.
Then, with the 2013 2014 season, something seemed to break for the Red and Blacks. They fell all the way to eighth place in the Serie A rankings, losing nearly as many soccer games (13) as they won (16), and failing to qualify for either the Europa or Champions leagues.
2014 2015 has been even more dismal for the wearers of the AC Milan shirt: they've spent most of the season fighting (and sometimes failing) to stay in the top 10, and actually have lost more games than they've won. Top goalscorer Jeremy Menez has done a decent job of keeping the football club's goal difference in the positive range, scoring 16 goals throughout the season. However, that hasn't been enough-especially with AC's lack of offensive depth and their downright mediocre defensive side.
Paving a Way for a Superior 2015 2016 SeasonÂ
The question now isn't whether the Red and Blacks can improve their position in the 2014 2015 Serie A. That ship has sailed, and the football club will now have to settle for a second low-ranking season in a row. Instead, the question is this: how can the soccer squad improve and rebuild this summer so that, when players don the AC Milan home jersey 2015 2016, they are ready to win games like the AC Milan lineups of old?
The first thing that needs to happen is some defensive growth. In the first 36 games of the 2014 2015 Serie A season, the Red and Blacks scored 50 goals and conceded 49. That's not nearly as bad as the "goals against" statistics for the teams facing relegation (all of which are in the 60s), but it is bad enough to be a near-historic low in the annals of AC Milan. In 2014 2015, the club also allowed 49 goals. Before that, though, you'd have to go all the way back to 1948 1949 to find a season where Milan allowed more goals (52, to be exact).
Many of AC's woes began in 2012, after the departure of not one, but two top-flight defenders (Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva). Both were among the best defenders in world, and Milan needs to find a few players like them in order to return to former levels of glory.
So what are the AC Milan Serie A 2015 - 2016 prospects, will the Red and Blacks be able to do that much rebuilding over the summer? Who knows. The summer transfer window will, of course, create opportunities, but rumors about who AC Milan might look to sign have been light so far. Root for the club's improvement regardless, with a new AC Milan shirt from Soccer Box!
