AC Milan's lukewarm 2014 2015 season continued in unsatisfactory fashion this past weekend, with the club drawing 2-2 in a home fixture against Hellas Verona's Mastiffs. Worse, the Red and Blacks only managed a draw in the match thanks to mistakes made by the opposing side. The tie allowed Milan to cling to a spot in the top 10 of the 2014 2015 Serie A-albeit narrowly. Hellas Verona
After this past weekend, it's clear that the Red and Whites need a little bit of extra football fan support to help them along. The wearers of the AC Milan shirt settled for a draw for the third time in just four weeks of competitive play. They've only won two games since the beginning of the New Year, too a February 1st win against Parma, and a February 22nd triumph over Cesena. Both victories were won at home.
Thus, as players pulled on the AC Milan home jersey on Saturday and headed out on the pitch at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, their chances at victory seemed fairly good. That was especially true considering the fact that their opponent was Hellas Verona. Of the 26 matches that the AC soccer squad has played this year, they've only won two away fixtures. One of those was at Verona on October 19th, when an own goal and a brace of points by striker Keisuke Honda gave AC a decisive 3-1 triumph.
If Milan could beat the Mastiffs in an away game, most figured that they would achieve another decisive outcome with the home field advantage on their side. Right from the beginning of Saturday's football contest, though, it was clear that wasn't going to be the case.
To start, the Mastiffs were the first team to score. Milan may have had stands full of adoring fans on their side, each clad in the AC Milan shirt. But when Hellas attacker Luca Toni drained a penalty goal opportunity to give the away squad a 1-0 advantage, the home squad seemed to lose their confidence.
Luckily, there was plenty of time for things to shift back in the home team's favor. Milan's Jeremy Menez equalized with a penalty goal of his own before the first half was over. And in the second half, the Red and Whites once again earned a point thanks to an own goal from the Verona side.
The mistake nearly cost the Mastiffs the game. And even when Nicolas Lopez got the away squad to two points with a last-minute scoring effort, it was still a muted moment in what could have easily been a victory for Hellas.
Still Alive
For the wearers of the AC Milan home jersey 2014 2015, the Mastiff mistake had the opposite impact, securing the football club a draw in a game they arguably should have lost. The draw, in turn, keeps the Red and Whites in the top 10 on the 2014 2015 Serie A standings table-a distinction they would have lost had they not managed to at least tie the game. Indeed, Palermo-the current 11th place squad-has the same point total as AC Milan, and is just six points behind in goal difference.
As long as AC sticks around in 10th place or higher, their chances for a late-season climb up the table still seem viable. A title run, at this point, is out of the question, given that Milan has only won eight games this season. However, they could still feasibly improve upon last year's eighth place finish, if they can stop skating by on opponents' mistakes.
