On Tuesday, January 13th, AC Milan became the first team to qualify for a slot in the Coppa Italia 2014 2015 quarterfinals. The Red and Blacks won a home fixture against fellow Serie A team Sassuolo to progress to the next round of the prestigious Italian football tournament. AC Milan versus Sassuolo
Coming into the round of 16 match, fans of AC Milan were a bit worried that their squad would make an early exit from the Coppa Italia 2014 2015. After all, in their first Serie A football fixture of the year, on January 6th, they'd lost 1-2 to Sassuolo. The defeat had even come at home, in the same stadium where they'd be facing the Black and Greens in the Italian Cup match.
But whether the Red and Blacks spent some extra time working in their AC Milan training gear during the first weeks of the New Year, or because they hit a patch of good luck, things turned out differently in the round of 16. In fact, the score was flipped: the home Milan squad won the fixture 2-1!
From the moment AC's players walked out onto the sidelines, wearing the AC Milan black tracksuit 2014 2015 in the brisk January weather, they had the momentum on their side. The home crowd was roaring, and the Red and Blacks simply looked ready to claim their first football victory of 2015.
They did just that, taking the lead at the 38-minute mark with a goal from striker Giampaolo Pazzini and holding it through halftime. The Black and Greens hit an equalizer with a 63-minute penalty goal by Nicola Sanzone, but AC took control again just minutes before match time expired. The winning goal was scored by midfielder Nigel de Jong.
AC Milan at the Coppa Italia
The victory over Sassuolo will give the Red and Blacks a chance to progress to the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup. But as the club's players pull on their AC Milan training gear and hit the soccer pitch to prepare for that challenge, let's take a look back at their history in this tournament.
Milan has won the Coppa Italia on five occasions, but three of them were in the 1970s. The most recent tournament title for the squad came all the way back in 2003. In other words, both fans and team members alike are ready for that sixth title.
Does the quarterfinal qualification bode well for AC's chances at picking up a trophy in 2015? Perhaps, but then again, the club also made it through the round of 16 last year only to be eliminated in the quarterfinals by Udinese. Similarly, in 2013, Milan was eliminated in the quarters by Juventus. Clearly, the quarterfinal round is a challenge for the club.
Want to help support the Red and Blacks toward that long-coveted Italian Cup title? Pick up an AC Milan black tracksuit 2014 2015 or training kit today!
