As the winner of the 2013 2014 Ekstraklasa, Legia Warsaw is currently the top football club in all of Poland. In their first match against Ajax, though, Legia couldn't overcome the Dutch champions.
In the Lancers' first appearance in the 2014 2015 UEL, fans in the Ajax shirt were treated to a satisfying victory. Held on Thursday, February 19th, the fixture took place at the Ajax home ground of Amsterdam Arena. The team used the home field advantage in their favor, taking the lead at the 34-minute mark with a goal from Arkadiusz Milik, and never letting it go.
Warsaw took a good number of shots during the matches, eight of them on target. Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen held a clean sheet regardless, though, and his strong performance helped the Lancers to a 1-0 victory.
The home victory gives Ajax the edge over Legia Warsaw in the UEL round of 32. However, there's still the away leg to worry about. On Thursday, players from the club will don the Ajax away shirt 2014 2015, and will head off to Poland for the away leg of the round. A win or draw will progress them to the next stage of the soccer competition.
Considering the fact that AFC Ajax hasn't made it to the round of 16 for the Europa League since the 2010 2011 season, such an outcome would be hugely satisfying for fans. Last year, they lost to Red Bull Salzburg in the round of 32; the year before, it was Liverpool; and in 2012, it was Manchester United. A simple away win in Warsaw will break this unflattering trend.
