Well it's official: Angel Di Maria's days at Manchester United are over. Just one season into a five-year contract with the Red Devils-and one year after the 27-year-old Argentine was thought to be the key to the football club's renaissance - Angel Di Maria transfers to Paris Saint Germain for a £44.3 million fee. That fee is a big downgrade from the £56.7 million Louis van Gaal paid to bring Di Maria to Manchester United. That transfer fee was and is the highest ever paid by an English club.

The Right Choice, or a Horrible Mistake?

For months now, it's been clear that Angel Di Maria wasn't going to be playing another season at Manchester United-let alone four more years. It would be easy to look at Di Maria's freshman season at the soccer club and call it a disaster. In 32 appearances (overall), the winger and attacking midfielder only scored four goals for the Red Devils. A glass-half-empty type might say that Man United paid more than £14 million for each of those goals!

Then again, Di Maria was never exactly a high-voltage scorer. Even in his best year at Real Madrid, 2013 2014, he only scored 11 goals in 52 overall appearances. Where he truly specialized was in assists. In 2013 2014, Angel provided 17 assists in 34 La Liga fixtures-a league high for that year.

He didn't lose that ability when he reached the Premier League, either: he was the division's third most reliable source for assists, providing 11 in his 27 league appearances. Had Angel been used for all 38 of United's league matches, he might have been able to contend with Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas (who tallied 19 assists) as the league's most valuable midfielder.

Granted, Di Maria couldn't play in all 38 matches, and missed out on a good portion of the season's second half due to pelvic and hamstring injuries. Still, based on the number of scoring opportunities that Angel created in his truncated playtime, some Man Utd fans and soccer analysts are wondering if Louis van Gaal made a big mistake by giving up on Di Maria so soon.

Paris Saint Germain: Reaping the Benefits

Paris Saint Germain are clearly more than willing to give Angel Di Maria a second chance, and for good reason. Despite the Argentine player's below-expectations performance in the Premier League, there are still plenty of things that make him an attractive signing for the Parisians-not the least of which is his assist tally from last season.

Indeed, in addition to being a dynamite player when it comes to creating scoring chances, Di Maria has enough impressive accomplishments on his resume for PSG to write off his 2014 2015 season as a fluke. Last summer, he played a huge role in getting the Argentina national football team to the World Cup final. And just a few months before that, he earned Man of the Match distinction in the Champions League final that won Real Madrid a record 10th UCL title.

Di Maria is also best when paired with a world-class offensive player: think Lionel Messi at Argentina, or PSG Home Shirt 2015 - 2016Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid. At Manchester United, there was really no star striker to repeatedly take the chances that Angel created and turn them into goals. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie were fine, but PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic has more in common with Messi and Ronaldo.

Ibrahmovic has recorded astounding numbers in his three years in Paris, peaking in 2013 2014 when he scored 41 goals in 45 appearances. Could having Angel Di Maria on the wing or in the midfield help the Swedish football star boost those numbers even higher in 2015 2016? We can't wait to find out.
