Group F Competition

Argentina is ranked at number 5 in the FIFA Rankings and appeared to be a front-runner after the qualification stages, they finished top of the CONMEBOL qualification tournament. Added to that, Argentina was drawn into Group F what was initially perceived as 3 easy wins for the Argentina national football team. The other members of Group F are Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina, none of these teams has recorded prior World Cup success, and are ranked by FIFA at 45, 43 and 21 respectively.

The strong ranking of Argentina against these 3 teams hinted at easy wins and walkover games however, that has not been the case in the opening 2 games. The Argentina football jerseys made their 1st appearance on 15th June at the Estadio do Maracana, Rio de Janeiro against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Based on the rankings this should have been Argentina toughest match but still a not too challenging opponent.

Argentina took the lead after 3 minutes through an own goal. Messi added a 2nd after halftime with Bosnia and Herzegovina getting 1 back in the 84th minute for a final score of 2-1. Argentina may have walked away with 3 points but the game was slow, labored and entirely unconvincing from the Argentina national football team.

Argentina V Iran

The 2nd outing of the Argentina 2014 World Cup home shirt was against Iran last night at the Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte. Iran played admirably in their game against Nigeria holding them to a 0-0 draw and securing a single point. Iran's 2014 World Cup preparation has been marred with political interruptions. They have arrived in Brazil as the least prepared team with a limited supply of kit and is quite frankly one of the least likely teams to perform well. However, they did not bow-out easily against the mighty Argentina.

To say that Argentina struggled would be an understatement. Iran used the same formation as against Nigeria and held strong, having some of the best chances of the whole game. Aguero made the only real challenge for the Argentina football jerseys in the 1st half, but the Iranian goalkeeper made a spectacular save keeping the score at 0-0 as the halftime whistle blew.

The stands were packed with supporters wearing the Argentina football jerseys, however, after 2 good shots by Iran early in the 2nd half their tumultuous cheers and adoration soon elapsed into frustration and mournful doubt. The 90 minutes were a struggle from start to finish with the game looked set to end in what could only be described as another 0-0 victory for Iran.

However, in the 90th minute the infamous Lionel Messi saved his team from defeat. Messi managed to find some space, around the almost impenetrable Iranian defense and hit the net. The goal wasn't spectacular, wasn't even really deserved but it was enough to secure 3 points for Argentina and guarantee their advancement to the Round of 16.

Argentina as Group F winner will meet the runner-up of Group E that is looking likely to be Switzerland or Ecuador. Of course, they still have their final Group stage game against Nigeria to hone their tactics on 25th June before meeting tougher competition.

It has been said that Argentina is often a slow burner in World Cup tournaments, scraping through the Group stages to ignite the later rounds with passion and skill.
