Something to Prove

After last year's Champions League exit, Bayern Munich is a squad with something to prove this time around.

It's not that the 2013 2014 squad did poorly in UEFA's club competition. On the contrary: the Bavarians won five out of their six matches in the group stage, losing only one to eventual English champs, Manchester City.

The knockout stage was every bit as successful for the German club. In the round of 16, two legs put Munich up 3-1 over Arsenal. Two more legs in the quarterfinals had them besting Manchester United 4-2. And going into the semis, it looked as if the wearers of the Bayern Munich soccer jersey would have a good chance of defending their title in the finals match.

Real Madrid, though, had other plans. The Spanish team managed to hold Bayern Munich scoreless in both semifinal legs. The ultimate score for the round was 5-0, and the Bavarians were eliminated in anything but triumphant fashion.

A Fresh Start

Luckily, every year brings a fresh start, and the 2014 2015 is a new canvas for the Bavarian team. For the first round of this tournament, the club has been drawn into Group E. This group includes Roma, Manchester City, and CSKA Moscow. The latter two clubs were in Bayern's group in 2013 as well.

After beating Manchester City 1-0 at home in mid-September, Bavarian players donned the Bayern Munich away shirt 2014 2015 for fixtures against Moscow and Roma. The former was another 1-0 win, served up by a 22-minute penalty goal by Thomas Muller. The latter, meanwhile, was one of the biggest football blowouts that the Bayern Munich shirt has delivered all season-and that includes all Bundesliga soccer play.

Indeed, the Roma away match was particularly thrilling for fans, and you can bet that it boosted the popularity of the Bayern Munich soccer jersey. Interestingly, unlike the other two UCL matches the team has played thus far, the game wasn't a complete shutout. On the contrary, Roma's Gervinho scored a point at the 66-minute mark wearing his team's home jersey.

Other than that single ray of sunshine, though, the entire fixture was a showcase of Bayern Munich's considerable talent. Arjen Robben was probably the star of the match, scoring one goal at nine minutes and another at 30, and assisting with Franck Ribery's point late in the second half.

However, Robben was far from being the only star in the Bayern Munich away shirt 2014 2015 at that Roma match. Thomas Muller scored another penalty goal and provided an assist for a goal by Mario Goetze. Robert Lewandowski also offered up a goal/assist combination (setting up one of Robben's goals). Xherdan Shaqiri provided the eighth and final goal of the match at the 80-minute mark, bringing the score to 7-1.

There is more football action to come in the 2014 2015 Champions League. The Bavarians will face Roma once more tomorrow, and will rematch with Man City and CSKA Moscow before the year is out. Based on the first trio of fixtures, though, the German soccer team is well on its way to a knockout stage berth.
