Borussia Dortmund are a German football team, they were founded in 1909 and have had a successful history playing in the top flight of German football, the Bundesliga.  Since 1909 the club have secured eight German league championships, the German Cup and German Super cup three and four times respectively, and in Europe they won the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1966 and the Champions LeaBORUSSIA DORTMUND HOME 2013-14gue in 1997.  However, with the turn of the new millennium their recent past has been more turbulent, the club was the first, and to date, only football club to be traded on the German stock exchange.  In the early 2000s the club struggled with bad financial management and failures to win any silverware, this situation resulted in a loan from rival side Bayern Munich, the sale of their home ground Westfalen stadium, an 80% drop in share value and a 20% pay cut for each of the players.  From 2003-2008 the team played under four different managers, during this period they failed to qualify for European football and were only saved from relegation by one point in 2007, the 2007-08 season saw a marginal improvement under manager Thomas Doll, who resigned at the end of the season. Doll was replaced by Jurgen Klopp who has transformed the clubs successes with relatively little capital and a young team.

Jurgen Klopp has made a name for himself as he changed the fortunes of the Borussia Dortmund squad on his own, since his arrival they have won the Bundesliga twice, the German Cup and last season they reached the Champions League final. His team is relatively young in comparison to many others with only one player over the age of 27, Klopp is known for having an eye for spotting young talent and putting them in a Dortmund football shirt.  When you consider the hefty price tag some teams pay for star players Klopp's team is in comparison exceedingly inexpensive.  Mats Hummels is now seen as one of the best defenders in football and is certainly an asset of the Dortmund side, Klopp secured him from Bayern, where his performance was lackluster, for £3.6m, this small investment has certainly gone a long way to bolster the fortunes of this club.  Piszczek has been compared to the likes of Ashley Cole and Dani Alves in his skill as a full-back, he was acquired by Klopp from Hertha Berlin in a free transfer and is now considered one of the best players in his position around the world.  Klopp signed Gundogan for £4.8m from Nuremberg and in the last two years has transformed from showing a potential to being remarkable, he is a midfielder like no other that epitomizes Klopp,s football style and philosophy.  The most expensive acquisition under Klopp is the £15m investment for Marco Reus who chooses to join Dortmund over rival team Bayern Munich, during his first season in a Borussia Dortmund football shirt he has scored 19 goals and made himself what appears to be indispensable to the future success of the team.

Last season Borussia Dortmund fell behind Bayern Munich coming second to them in the Bundesliga and losing to them in the Champions League final, despite this Klopp has stated that he is happy with his team. Klopp is a charismatic manager who is known to communicate well with the players.  So far this transfer window has been quiet for the German team, Gotze was sold to Bayern for £31m, Papastathopoulos a Greek footballer and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyeng from St Etienne are the only incoming players both are fresh young talent that Klopp can obviously see great promise in.
