On Saturday, May 16th, we got a preview of the upcoming DFB Pokal final 2015: a Bundesliga match between Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund. Carrying both the better league ranking and the home field advantage, Wolfsburg took control of the fixture with a goal at the one-minute mark, and ultimately
pushed toward a 2-1 victory. But will the outcome be similar at the big DFB Cup final, scheduled for the end of May? Or will BVB surprise everyone with a win?
If there's one thing Borussia Dortmund have proven throughout the 2014 2015 football season, it's that they can never be counted out. At the beginning of the New Year, the Black and Yellows were in dead last on the 2014 2015 Bundseliga standings table, facing relegation from the division. However, they've worked their way back up into a respectable top 10 position, and are building the foundation for a better run in 2015 2016. So while the squad might have lost to Wolfsburg on May 16th, that doesn't necessarily mean they will lose again on May 30th.

The 2014 2015 DFB Pokal so Far
Need more proof that Borussia Dortmund can't be counted out of any situation? Look no further than the tournament narrative for this year's DFB Pokal. Even in the midst of a difficult football season, BVB managed to repeatedly excel in cup matches, from earlier round fixtures (blowouts against the likes of the Stuggarter Kickers, FC St. Pauli, and Dynamo Dresden), to latter-tournament nail-biters.
Indeed, the Black and Yellows have provided a number of very exciting matches throughout the 2014 2015 DFB Pokal's latter stages. In the quarterfinals, they took on 1899 Hoffenheim in a very back-and-forth fixture. The game was tied at 2-2 at the end of full time, and BVB won in extra time.
The defining moment of Dortmund's Pokal run, though-and arguably of their entire 2014 2015 campaign-came in the semifinals. Wearing the Borussia Dortmund away jersey for an away match at Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, the Black and Yellows were widely expected to bow out of the tournament. Bayern Munich were, after all, the defending DFB Pokal champions, having beaten BVB in the 2013 2014 final.
However, in a fiercely competitive match, the Borussia squad showed surprising strength and resilience. Munich took the lead with a 29-minute goal from Robert Lewandowski, but BVB equalized at the 75-minute mark (thanks to Aubameyang) to send the game into extra time. The additional half hour of play did nothing to break the 1-1 stalemate, and the match ultimately came down to penalty kicks. Bayern Munich missed four shots in a row to give Dortmund an opening, and the Black and Yellows took that chance to win the game and secure a spot in the finals.
Wolfsburg
Still, even if the wearers of the Borussia Dortmund football shirt have already toppled the German champions in this year's DFB Pokal, that doesn't exactly mean it will be smooth sailing going forward. Wolfsburg will finish the 2014 2015 Bundesliga season in second place, and literally just showed that they can beat the Black and Yellows in a head-to-head soccer game.
With that said, Wolfsburg have shown more weakness throughout the 2014 2015 Pokal than Borussia Dortmund have. Not only have they faced easier opponents (the highest-ranked team they have played so far was SC Freiburg, currently in 14th on the Bundesliga table), but they were nearly eliminated from the competition back in the first round. In round 1, Wolfsburg ended up in a penalty kick shootout against 2. Bundesliga squad SV Darmstadt 98, after full time and extra time, left the score tied at 0-0. They won the shootout 5-4, but it was too close for comfort for the Bundesliga heavyweights.
