Last night was the night England wore their new England football kit for the first time, they drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland. This was quite a disappointing result as a win would have given the fans, manager and players the confidence to believe they are capable of beating top teams. Roy Hodgson chose to play the classical 4-4-2 with his players but this has been criticized by football specialists and former players. Gary Lineker said that he could not believe Hodgson has chosen to play his players in a 4-4-2 format. The 4-4-2 system is very rarely used anymore in football; most managers will not use the old format now as it has proved to be less effective than others.
Hodgson tried to back up his chosen system by adding in some positive comments saying that the players played well and tried to get around the Republic Of Ireland defence. However this may not be good enough to 'try' against a side like Brazil. England will play Brazil in a friendly on Sunday 2nd June. Some key players such as Jack Wilshere have been ruled out, the 21 year old star was also ruled out of the Republic of Ireland game so did not play a part in the match. Wilshere is due to have more surgery on his ankle; he injured this near the start of the season and has barely features in the Arsenal starting eleven since.
A few players included in yesterday's England squad included Frank Lampard, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Phil Jagielka, Carrick, Cahill and Daniel Sturridge. Two players who stood out in the match and were very highly rated by the media were Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott. Rooney has endured a very hard end of season at Manchester United; he has not been named in the starting 11 for some time. Rooney handed in his own transfer request which was rejected by Manchester United, now new boss David Moyes is taking over we will have to wait and see what happens. Either way Wayne Rooney showed last night he is capable of playing great football.
On Sunday England are going to have to pull a few tricks from their sleeves if they are to stand a chance against Brazil. The Brazil squad will feature some great players such as Ronaldinho, Neymar, Silva, Oscar, Luiz and Fabiano. England have only won 3 out of their 23 international matches against Brazil so they will have to go out on Sunday and play their very best. It will be interesting to see if Roy changes his 4-4-3 system for this match, we can hope.
What do you think of England's chances against Brazil on Sunday? Do you think England played well on Wednesday against the Republic of Ireland?
