Manchester City won't defend their Premier League title this year, and will instead have to settle for a likely runner-up spot as Chelsea FC claim all the glory. However, in at least one contest the Sky Blues
have risen above Chelsea's league-winning squad: the EPL Golden Boot 2015 award. Barring some miraculous performance in the final week of competition, Manchester City's Sergio Aguero will take the prize, with 25 goals to his name in league matches this year. The Golden BootÂ
Argentina's Sergio Aguero may not have scored a goal in Manchester City's 4-2 win against Swansea City on Sunday. The man of the match title instead went to his teammate Yaya Toure, who netted two of the four goals to give the Sky Blues a clinch away victory in the second-to-last fixture of the soccer season.
However, even if Aguero hasn't scored in every match this year, and even if Manchester City won't be winning the league title, the 26-year-old striker has enjoyed an undoubtedly stellar soccer season. Going into the final match of the 2014 2015 campaign (a home game with Southampton), Aguero has netted 25 goals in league competition this year, plus another six in cup and continental play.
That exemplary run will win Aguero the first Golden Boot award of his senior career. It will also be only the second time that a Manchester City player has won the prize. The Sky Blues' lone Golden Boot winner before this year was Carlos Tevez, who won in 2011 with a 20-goal season. Incidentally, Tevez was also the first football player from Argentina to claim the Premier League's Golden Boot, and Aguero is the second.
The Contenders
When he officially wins the Golden Boot after next weekend's season-concluding run of games, Aguero will likely have simply run away with the prize. Right now, the Argentine striker has tallied 25 goals this season. That's five more points than every one else in the league.
Aguero's closest competition at the moment is Harry Kane, who scored 20 goals in league during a breakout season at Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea's Diego Costa rounds out the current top three, with 19 goals. Charlie Austin (Queens Park Rangers, with 17 goals) and Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal, with 16) are the only other football players within 10 goals of Aguero's total.
In other words, Sergio Aguero dominated the Premier League offensively this year, much like Luis Suarez did in 2013 2014. Suarez scored 31 goals for Liverpool last season-nine more than teammate and closest contender, Daniel Sturridge. (Aguero finished in fourth, with 17 goals.)
A Fitting Winner
Even if Manchester City are not to be the champions of this year's Premier League, Sergio Aguero is certainly a fitting winner of the Golden Boot award. He's been a near-constant contender for the prize
since 2011 2012, when he came to Manchester City (and to the English Premier League) from Atletico Madrid.
In his very first season in the EPL, Aguero was one of the top three goalscorers, netting 23 points to finish behind Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in the Golden Boot line. 2012 2013 was his off year, with only 12 goals and a 13th place finish on the season scorers chart. But 2013 2014 saw him back in the top five, and this year Sergio has finally ascended to the top of the game.
So what's next for the talented Aguero? There were rumors this spring that Real Madrid might be ready to offer a £70 million bid to Manchester City to bring Sergio back to Spain. (That's double what City paid Atletico for him in 2011.) However, as the months go by, it appears those rumors were just that-rumors-and that Aguero will be sticking around in England for at least another year. That's good news for the Sky Blues, so celebrate today with a new Manchester City shirt from Soccer Box.
