The 2014 2015 DFB Pokal
On Wednesday, March 4th, the Bavarians gave fans new reason to head to Soccer Box's FC Bayern Munich shop. Winning 2-0 in a home fixture against Eintracht Braunschweig, Munich progressed to the quarterfinals of the 2014 2015 incarnation of the DFB Pokal.
The victory was to be expected. For one thing, Eintracht Braunschweig is a second tier football squad in Germany, having been relegated last season after coming in last place in the Bundesliga. For another, Bayern Munich hasn't lost a German Cup fixture since May of 2012. Heck, the Bavarians haven't even drawn a Pokal match since that May 12th, 2012 loss against Borussia Dortmund.
Needless to say, as the Bavarian players donned the Bayern Munich home jersey and prepared to face off against Braunschweig, their victory was more or less guaranteed. Home fans at Allianz-Arena weren't disappointed, either. Munich won the fixture on a pair of goals, scored by David Alaba and Mario Gotze, respectively. Manuel Neuer also earned his paycheck, doing the Bayern goalkeeper jersey proud by keeping a clean sheet in the soccer game.
The Quarterfinals
The 2-0 home victory earns the Bavarians advancement to the quarterfinal round of the 2014 2015 German Cup. The team has sailed through the tournament so far, beating the third tier Prussia Munster 4-1 in the first round, and topping Hamburger SV by 3-1 in the second round to earn frontrunner status.
The quarterfinals is where things are going to get tricky. Most of the weaker or lower-tier football clubs have now been eliminated from the club. The eight surviving teams, along with Munich, are Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen, SC Freiburg, Wolfsburg, and Arminia Bielefeld. The latter club is the only one left not from the Bundesliga. Instead, Arminia is a 3. Liga club that upset Werder Bremen in the third round to earn a quarterfinal spot.
Despite the number of heavyweight German football clubs still contending for the 2014 2015 DFB title, fans shopping at Soccer Box's FC Bayern Munich shop should feel pretty strongly about their club's chances at a third consecutive title. The only team in the tournament that has beaten Bayern during the 2014 2015 season is Wolfsburg, who dealt the Bavarians their sole loss of this year's Bundesliga at a January away fixture. Of course, Munich also beat the Wolves back in August, at the first game of the season.
The only other team left in the Pokal tournament that could really challenge Bayern is Borussia Monchengladbach. The Foals have stuck around in second place for the majority of the 2014 2015 Bundesliga. When the two clubs played one another in October, Monchengladbach managed to hold Munich to a scoreless draw.
Luckily, the Bavarian side will have another chance to defeat the Foals (and reassert their German football dominance) before the German Cup quarterfinal round is played in early April. On March 22nd, players will don the Bayern Munich home jersey 2014 2015 to challenge Borussia in a Bundesliga fixture at Allianz-Arena.
Is there a squad in Germany that can topple Bayern? Or is the soccer squad headed toward third consecutive titles in both the Bundesliga and the German Cup? Root for the club today, with a new home jersey or away jersey from Soccer Box's FC Bayern Munich shop.
