A Broken Rivalry
The Old Firm rivalry that exists between Glasgow's two football clubs is one of the oldest sports rivalries in the world, as well as one of the most heated. In fact, there are plenty of fans out there who would call it one of the top five rivalries in all of sport-if not the natural choice for the top slot.
Because of this, the Scotland soccer scene was shaken far beyond the fans in the Glasgow Celtic football shirt when the Rangers were ejected from the Premiership. The ruling was expected, of course. The Rangers had been suffering from money troubles, and when the team was sold, it also had to be relegated way down the Scottish soccer ladder.
After a second place finish in 2010 2011 (behind the Celts, of course), the Rangers were dropped to the fourth tier of the sport. They have spent the years since winning lesser divisions and climbing back toward the Premiership.
In the absence of their crosstown rivals, the Celts have utterly dominated the top league, winning the 2012 2013 and 2013 2014 seasons by remarkably wide margins. It's a good bet that when you buy the Glasgow Celtic home jersey, you are investing in a team that will win yet another title this year.
A Mixed Bag
For Celtic fans, all of this has been a huge mixed bag. On one hand, fans have gotten to see their club in an era of relatively unprecedented prosperity. If the Celts win the Premiership title this year, it will be the first time since the 1970s that they've had a winning streak last longer than three consecutive seasons.
On the other hand, though, the relegation of the Rangers has placed one of the greatest rivalries in football on indefinite hold. Since these two Glasgow squads are not currently playing in the same circles, they have had no head-to-head matches lately. The last meetings of the Rangers and the Celts took place in March and April of 2012. Each team won one of the fixtures.
Needless to say, fans of both squads are missing the old rivalry. And sadly, there is no possibility of the Glasgow Celtic football shirt being worn at a hometown duel between the two teams this year. The soonest possible match-up would happen next season and only if the Rangers are promoted back into the Premiership come May.
Stagnation?
It's possible that the Old Firm will finally reconvene with 2015 2016 league competition, but the Celts have another problem to worry about.
Indeed, the club seems to be stagnating without their rivals there to challenge them. Celtic has gotten off to a lukewarm start this year, with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses that places the club in sixth place (out of 12 teams) on the Premiership table.
Of course, the Celts still have plenty of time to make a comeback, and fans can help them do so! Simply stop by Soccer Box today and pick up a new Glasgow Celtic football shirt.
