The Switzerland Match
England's first match in the Euro 2016 qualifying rounds pitted them against Switzerland, a team that put forth a considerably stronger performance at this summer's World Cup. Switzerland beat both Ecuador and Honduras en route to a Round of 16 appearance in Brazil.
The Swiss side then lost to Argentina, in extra time, during the first round of the knockout stage. Argentina, of course, went on to lose to Germany-again, in extra time-in the championship match of the World Cup.
Needless to say, Switzerland made quite an impression at the World Cup this summer, and since England made hardly an impression at all, many wondered if the Brits would fail in their first Euro 2016 qualifying match.
Evidently, though, the England side is stronger than they have been given credit for. Even playing on Swiss turf, in the city of Basel, England was able to stake a 2-0 lead to win the match.
England's win against Switzerland must be credited almost entirely to Danny Welbeck. The 23-year-old forward, who plays for Arsenal on the league level after transferring from Manchester United over the summer, scored a brace of goals to singlehandedly account for all of the match's scoring action. It's not tough to see why most people buying the England infant football kits these days are doing so with thoughts of Welbeck in mind!
The Next Steps
So what's next for England in the Euro 2016 qualifiers? Luckily, the British side has already faced arguably its biggest competition in qualifying Group E. Of the other teams in the group-Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, and San Marino-none went to this year's World Cup, much less actually made it to the Round of 16 like Switzerland did. In other words, England may well have smooth sailing from here on out to earn qualification for the 2016 European Championships!
