After one of the most tumultuous seasons in Borussia Dortmund history, longtime manager Jurgen Klopp
asked to leave the club. His request was granted, and Klopp's role will be filled next season by Thomas Tuchel, who himself is returning from a sabbatical after five seasons spent managing FSV Mainz. What does this mean for the Black and Yellows? Will the club's play style shift dramatically to suit Tuchel's new management styles? What kind of transfers might be expected under new management? Is Tuchel the right choice to take over? These are all questions that BVB football fans are asking so we try and assess Jurgen Klopp versus Thomas Tuchel how different are their management styles?
Klopp's Borussia Dortmund Career and Departure
One thing is for certain: Jurgen Klopp will be missed. This year may have been an emotional roller coaster for fans in the Borussia Dortmund football shirt. BVB dropped all the way down to last place on the Bundesliga table, before fighting their way back up to a seventh place finish. However, even with a disappointing season, Klopp remains one of BVB's best soccer managers ever.
Indeed, after taking on the role of head coach back in 2008, Klopp became only the third BVB manager to lead his team to two championship titles. Helmut Schneider (1955 1957) and Ottimar Hitzfield are the other two. Like Hitzfield, Jurgen also pushed Borussia Dortmund to two Supercup Titles. Unlike Hitzfield, he never got a win at the Champions League, but did score a German Cup victory.
If Klopp gets the edge on Hitzfield, it's because of his 2011 2012 squad. Winning the Bundesliga for the second year in a row, Dortmund also recorded record-breaking or tying numbers for total wins in a season (25), longest unbeaten run (28 games), and highest season point total (81). Bayern Munich would go on to break two of those three records the next year, but Klopp's 2011 2012 BVB team remains one of the greatest squads in German football history.
Klopp's legacy alone at BVB would have saved him from sacking this year, even after a below-expectations soccer season. In the end, though, he was the one to make the decision to leave.
"I have always said that the day I feel that I am no longer the perfect coach for this extraordinary club I will say that," Klopp said of his decision to leave Borussia Dortmund. "That is something I have thought about in every phase here at Dortmund and decided in the last few weeks, days, that I was no longer able to be absolutely sure about that."
Thomas Tuchel's Career and Coaching StyleÂ
So it was that the door was opened for Thomas Tuchel to take the reins at Signal Iduna Park. The reception to his appointment has been strong so far, and he really does seem like a natural successor to Klopp. In 2008, Jurgen came to Dortmund from Mainz, after a seven-year stint in the football club. Similarly, Tuchel is arriving at BVB from Mainz, with five seasons of coaching under his belt.
Both coaches retained about a 40% win percentage while at Mainz, but Tuchel actually had more success with the team, at least in terms of standings. Where Mainz was mostly a second-division team under Klopp's leadership, Tuchel made the club a top-flight property. He coached Mainz to two Europa League qualifications, as well as to fifth place result in 2010 2011-their highest-ever Bundesliga finish.
As far as coaching style is concerned, Tuchel is perhaps less conventional than Klopp. At Mainz, he pushed team bonding and collaborative mentality, as well as innovative tactics to throw more experienced football clubs off their guard.
For instance, in August 2009, in one of his first fixtures as manager at Mainz, Tuchel coached his team to a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich, using a unique 4-1-4-1 defensive formation to dismantle Bayern's 4-3-3 offensive attacks. The defensive style, known now as "counter-pressing" has been used by both Jurgen Klopp and Bayern Munich's Pep Guardiola in recent years, but Tuchel was one of the pioneers of the style. Since Borussia Dortmund's soccer players are already more or less familiar with the counter-pressing method, Tuchel should fit right in at Signal Iduna Park.
