It would not be a stretch to say that Juventus FC have so far experienced a disastrous 2015 2016 football season. After winning four Serie A titles in a row, the Zebras have slipped to 16th place in the Italian top-flight division this fall. And while the season is still in its earliest stages, the fact that Juve lost arguably their two best players over the summer (Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal) does not inspire much confidence for the soccer squad's chances. However, this week Juventus score surprise Champions League win, could this be the boost the club needed?
Juventus were not expected by many to win their opening Champions League match. While the Zebras are coming into the UCL this year fresh off a runner-up finish in the prestigious tournament, that is just about all they had going for them heading into game one. Their opponents were Manchester City, who have won all five of their domestic league matches so far, and the match was scheduled to take place at Man City's Etihad Stadium. The deck, it seemed, was stacked against Juventus.
An Unexpected Rally
During the first half of the match, it did indeed look like the Zebras were in trouble. After a scoreless first half, the wearers of the Juventus away shirt 2015 2016 fell behind on an own goal at the 57-minute mark. It was an embarrassing moment for defender Giorgio Chiellini, who accidentally headed the ball into the top left corner of the goal. When David Silva nearly scored again for Man City just minutes later, it seemed as if the writing was on the wall for Juventus.
But then, the reigning Italian champs rallied. After a long passing volley, Juventus laid their trap in the 60th minute, with Paul Pogba putting the ball within easy range of the goal. From there, Mario Mandzukic merely had to stick out his leg to send a shot into the net. Just like that, the score was equalized, and Juventus were back in the football game.
11 minutes later, Juve weren't just back into the game; they were leading it. Manchester City dominated possession in those 11 minutes-and indeed, throughout the game-but Juve kept strong on defense and took an opportunity when it came. When an opportunity did arrive, Alvaro Morata capitalized, drilling a beautiful shot into the right-hand corner of the net.
A Huge Victory for Juventus
It was fairly clear that Manchester's Sky Blues didn't know what to do after that. The fans in the stands at Etihad Stadium, previously so confident in their soccer team's chances, fell silent after Morata's goal, and the vibe in the stadium was in Juve's favor after that. The Zebras merely had to hold the lead for 12 minutes after that to score a surprising victory in their first Champions League match of the new football season.
This win was the first positive outcome in weeks for Juventus, who hadn't won a game since their August 8th Supercopa Italia victory against Lazio. The hope among fans in the Juventus shirt 2015 2016 is that this match will help turn things around for the Zebras in the Serie A.
For now, though, Juventus will have to settle for being in second place in UCL Group D. With their 2-1 win, the Zebras had the second best outcome of a football club in the group. Spain's Sevilla are at the top, having crushed Germany's Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0. Monchengladbach's loss, meanwhile, saves Manchester City from last place in the group.
Of course, the teams will still be playing a lot of soccer before two of them are eliminated from the competition, and two of them progress to the knockout stages. The next Group D matches are set for September 30th, with Borussia Monchengladbach hosting Manchester City and Juventus hosting Sevilla.
