Fast-forward to the halfway point in the 2014 2015 season, and things are not looking nearly as good for the Great Danes. Of the 18 games the team has played so far, they've only won five. Therefore they have a lot of ground to make up in 2015, if they are going to be anywhere near the podium come May. Fall from Grace
At this point last year, Lille had already taken up residence in the third-place slot. The squad didn't leave that position once during the second half of the 2013 2014 Ligue 1-a testament to their impressive consistency.
2014 2015, meanwhile, has been a fall from grace of sorts for the wearers of the Lille soccer jersey. Last year, the team managed a record of 20 wins; 11 draws, and seven losses throughout the entire 38-game stretch. In the first half of the 2014 2015 Ligue 1, they lost seven games and drew six. In other words, it only took them half a season to lose as many football games as they did in a full one last year.
No Offensive Lineup
Part of the reason for the less-than-stellar record is that the Great Danes don't have a star goal scorer on the lineup right now. Last season, they had Saloman Kalou, who scored 16 goals in league and 18 overall. Kalou traded the Lille home shirt for a Hertha Berlin jersey over the summer, leaving Lille without much of an offensive presence on the football field.
Indeed, the most prolific goalscorer for the Great Danes lately has been Belgian striker, Divock Origi. The 19-year-old Origi is a definite talent, having been one of the youngest goalscorers at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, he isn't consistent enough yet to carry a team or be a star player: in 16 appearances this fall, he scored only three points.
Transfer Rumors
The fact that Origi was even still wearing the Lille soccer jersey during the fall of 2014 was a bit surprising. After his breakout performance at the World Cup, the young Belgian transferred to Liverpool. He was promptly loaned back to Lille, where he had played since 2012.
With that said, Divock may not be sticking around to don the Lille home shirt 2014 2015 after the January transfer window. There is a rumor that Liverpool manager Brandon Rogers is going to pay a premium price to recall Origi and bring him back to Anfield. Like Lille, Rogers' Reds have been struggling with offensive presence as of late and could use some new blood to help with a course correction effort.
So where does that leave the Great Danes? Even if Origi hasn't scored a lot of goals in the 2014 2015 Ligue 1, he's still been the squad's most effective offensive player. Losing him could hurt the club's competitive chances even further.
Of course, with the January transfer window, Lille could collect a few new players of its own for the second half of the season. However, there hasn't been much chatter yet about which players could be heading to Stade Pierre-Mauroy to don the Lille home jersey and help steer the club back onto the right track.
