The 2012 - 2013 season saw the team lose the Premier League to rivals Manchester United, and lose the FA Cup final to Wigan. After a disappointing season that also saw a less than convincing performance in Europe, head coach Roberto Mancini was sacked.
New Manager and Winning Ways
Manuel Pellegrini was chosen as his replacement. Pellegrini has been a popular choice and has been very vocal of his dreams for success. He stated that this year would see the team wearing Manchester City football shirts win the elusive quadruple.
With Pellegrini at the helm, the Manchester City home jersey has been extremely popular this season. Nike has taken over as the team's kit manufacturer this season. The design of the new home kit is a classic soccer shirt style that stands out as a winner. The simple sky blue shirt features a white round neckline, and sleeve trims. The white trim is offset with a thin navy blue line. This simple yet striking shirt is available now at the Soccer Box shop.
After a few initial disappointing results Pellegrini has worked his magic on the Manchester City squad. The Manchester City home jersey 2013 - 2014 has become widely feared. At the team's home ground, the Etihad Stadium the team has been invincible. Among other results, they beat rivals and current Premier League champions Manchester United 4-1 in September, and Spurs lost 6-0 in November.
After a string of good results in the league, FA cup, League Cup and Champions League Pellegrini began talking about winning the quadruple. This was perhaps a little premature given recent events. On 3rd February, Manchester City lost their 1st home game since 2010, when Chelsea beat them 1-0. However, a week later the tie was repeated in the FA Cup 5th round. Man City prevailed this time round and advanced to the quarterfinal.
FA Cup Final Misery
Unfortunately, for Manchester City the FA Cup quarterfinal draw resulted in the prospect of a replay of last years final. The 2013 FA Cup final saw the Manchester City football shirts face those of Wigan Athletic. With Wigan facing relegation, and Man City as current Premier League champions, it is not difficult to imagine which team was favorite. The Sky Blue's had shown strong performances in the FA Cup, and travelled to Wembley confidence high.
The match was intense, not the easy win the Manchester side had imagined. The Manchester City players fought hard, too hard, resulting in 3 yellow cards and the eventual sending off of Zabaleta wearing his number 5 jersey. At 90 minutes the score was 0-0, and the teams were facing 30 minutes of extra-time. However, Watson had other ideas, he netted in the 91st minute giving Wigan the lead and the FA Cup trophy.
FA Cup Quarterfinal Disaster
Losing the FA Cup final, to a team that was eventually relegated from the Premier League was a major blow to Manchester City. This year's quarterfinal draw again placed Man City and Wigan as opponents. Pellegrini and his team would of gone into the game with trepidation following last years defeat, but also determined to win.
Manchester City had the home advantage, but even their favored Manchester City home jersey 2013 - 2014 wasn't enough to regain face from last year's disaster. Wigan went 1-0 up after 27 minutes, after being awarded a penalty. Being 1-0 down wasn't enough to spur on Pelligrini's men and Wigan added a 2nd just after halftime. Nasri reignited some hope into the home team, making the score-line 1-2 on the 68th minute.
Throughout the entire game Manchester City dominated the possession, and had more shots on goal. However, the flexible defensive style of Wigan was enough to thwart Manchester City's chances. Once again, Manchester City have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Wigan, and taken away all hopes of winning the quadruple during the 2013 - 2014 season. Can City pull themselves together and compete for the treble, or is this loss enough to destabilize the team and manager?
