What can £750 million buy in the English Premier League? For Adidas, it bought a 10-year kit sponsorship agreement with Manchester United-a world record deal that inspired the Red Devils to end their 13-year partnership with Nike. Nike had been making United's official football kits since 2002, when the club chose not to renew its sponsorship deal with Umbro after 10 years. Adidas actually has been United's kit manufacturer in the past-from 1980 to 1992-but the Manchester United home kit 2015 - 2016 marks first time in a long time, that we've seen the trademark Adidas stripes on the shoulders of a Devils jersey.
Fittingly, then, the design of the Manchester United home jersey 2015 2016 seems to hearken back to the soccer club's jerseys from the 1980s. In fact, Adidas seem to be picking up right where they left off with the Red Devils. The new home kit is red with a swooping V-neck and white and black trim-a design that has been appropriately described as "retro" by many of the sources that covered Man United's kit launch.
Indeed, the new Red Devils home jersey looks so much like Adidas' earlier designs for the football club that it could almost be confused as a late-80s or early-90s kit. Sure, the Adidas logo has changed in the past 20 years, and Chevrolet is Man United's kit sponsor now instead of Sharp Electronics, but all other design hallmarks of this jersey are similar to what Adidas was doing many years ago.
The Kit Launch
Given the hefty £750 million value of the new contract between Manchester United and Adidas, expectations for the home kit launch were quite high in the soccer community. The Red Devils didn't disappoint. As the clock struck midnight on August 1st, the football club promptly and proudly introduced the new Manchester United home jersey 2015 2016.
Defender Phil Jones and midfielder Daley Blind were both on hand to show off the new football shirt, as well as to present a stylish-and slightly strange-promo video for the shirt. The kit launch video-which features appearances from Manchester United players like Ander Herrara, Luke Shaw, and Juan Mata-is a mélange of hellish imagery, foreboding music, and even a poem about the Red Devils. Adidas were obviously playing up the "Devil" concept with this ad, and shots of it even show Man Utd stars running or breaking glass with big red pitchforks. In a summer season that has seen its fair share of short and sweet video kit launches, this one played more like the trailer to a blockbuster film.
Still, the ad is definitely enough to get your blood pumping-especially the final shot, where the tagline for the new Adidas-Man United partnership, "Break Expectations"-appears on the screen. There's also a hashtag encouraging Manchester United fans to #BeTheDifference.
"Be the Difference"
Needless to say, the hope among Man Utd club supporters is that this new shirt will "be the difference" for the Red Devils this season. The soccer squad will look to reclaim the Premier League title in 2015 2016, after two consecutive seasons without a win.
This length of time between titles is unusual for Manchester United. Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, the Red Devils have been the victors 13 times. Only once before has the football club's title gap lasted for longer than a season: they won the title in 2002 2003, but failed to return to the top of the podium until 2006 2007.
The good news for United fans is that last season was much better than the year before. 2013 2014 was a disastrous season for the soccer squad, ending in a seventh place finish on the Premier League table. Last year, the Red Devils finished fourth, which means they'll return to the Champions League this season after a yearlong absence.
