Last season, Man Utd and Liverpool seemed to swap places in the English Premier League. The former went from dominating the division to seventh place, while the latter leaped from seventh place all the way into the runner-up position. The Reds almost won the title, too, but were passed by Manchester City in the final weeks of competitive football play.
This time around, the Reds have been struggling to live up to that high achievement, and they have been climbing the Premier League table nonetheless since January. A win against Man Utd would have moved the Reds into fourth place.
Luckily for fans in the Man Utd home shirt, the Red Devils are holding strong in fourth after Sunday's match. Even though Liverpool had the home field advantage, Manchester took control at Anfield early. The star of the game was undoubtedly Juan Mata, who scored the first goal of the fixture at the 14-minute mark, and then scored again at 59 minutes to put his club up 2-0 with half an hour remaining.
The Reds did eventually score: Daniel Sturridge found the back of the net 10 minutes after Mata's second goal, to make it a one-point game. Meanwhile, none of Manchester's other offensive football players managed a point. Regardless, though, Mata's two goals were enough to secure a victory for the Devils. It was the second time in this campaign that United had beaten Liverpool, with the first being a 3-0 home game played back in December.
The Point Standings
The outcome of Sunday's fixture leaves the wearers of the Manchester United jersey with 59 points on the 2014 2015 Premier League standings table. That's just one point behind Arsenal, and two behind Man City. Chelsea FC, meanwhile, remains significantly ahead of the pack, with 67 points. The Reds, meanwhile, are back at 54 points, and likely just lost their best opportunity of climbing the standings.
The good news is that the Red Devils will have no problem surpassing their point total from last year. In 2013 2014, Man Utd finished the year with just 64 points. With any luck, the football club should surpass that point total in just a few weeks.
With that said, the next few fixtures will present a few substantial challenges for the United squad. On April 4th, they should have an easy victory, in a home game with Aston Villa. On April 12th, though, they will don the Man Utd home shirt 2014 2015 for a crosstown rivalry game with Man City. And on April 18th, they will take on Chelsea in an away fixture.
One way or another, these two games will make the difference between a "solid" season for Man Utd, and a "great" one. Victories in one or both would push the Red Devils up in the standings and function as huge badges of honor for the club. Losses would show that the football club still has another year or two to go to reach former levels of greatness.
