With the World Cup in Russia fast approaching, there are lots of talk amongst supporters about who the stronger teams are this year. From previous winners to new comers, it is truly anyone’s game. Within the post we will try to establish who the main competitors are this season for the trophy as well as addressing who the underdogs could potentially be. 

Previous Winners

Established in 1930 the first ever World Cup took place in Uruguay and has since been hosted in a variety of countries across the globe. In history 5 countries have lifted the cup more than once, with the most wins being Brazil with 5 tournament victories. Below we will look at the break down of the winners in history:

Not all goalkeepers can claim to be the subject of a ‘Top 6 Goals’ highlight reel on YouTube, but then 1990's star Jorge Campos was nothing like all goalkeepers. In fact, watching the aforementioned tribute video, the immediate impression formed is that he was something of a predatory finisher with quick feet and quicker thinking.

Time for some crucial context for the confused: Campos was, at various points throughout his career, a striker. No, he didn’t just go up for the odd corner kick when his team were losing and only seconds remained;

While drawing with the United States wasn't necessarily a bad result, one that importantly means they've still never lost at home inside the Azteca to the U.S, Mexico will still feel a sense that they should've taken all three points.

After all, they largely dominated the game on their way to amassing 74% of the possession and looked the more composed side. But Bruce Arena's visiting side deserve credit for the way they diligently stuck to their task, defending extremely competently in their usually deep block.

Mexico's multifaceted midfield dynamo, Hector Herrera, went into his side's colossal Copa America opener against Uruguay with rumours rife about his future at club level.

If reports are to be believed, Liverpool, Napoli and Valencia have all recently shown a keen interest in FC Porto's prized asset, who the Dragoes value at a cool €20m million, with Liverpool apparently just ceding Napoli in the race for his signature.

Judging on his exceptional performance in Mexico's entrancing victory over La Celeste, Herrera was clearly unaffected by all the talk surrounding him. Instead, he just went about his work in customarily tireless and robust fashion, in a performance where his technical gifts and goalscoring capacity also shone through brightly.

The United States ended up winning the title, beating Panama in the final while Mexico settled for a third place finish. Coming into this year's tournament, the Mexican national team had won a record six CONCACAF Gold Cups. The USA were looking to tie that record, having won their fifth in 2013. In other words, the race was on.

As the host nation Brazil was automatically placed as team 1 in Group A, as favorites to top their group and indeed win the entire tournament, that left a single spot for one of 3 teams to advance to the knockout stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The progression of Brazil wasn't as sure footed as many had suspected. They beat Croatia in an unconvincing 3-1 1^st game, and only managed a 0-0 draw against the team wearing the Mexico football jerseys. Statistically both Mexico and Croatia could progress but it relied on Brazil being beaten heavily by Cameroon. An unlikely prospect, meaning both teams needed to go out to win.
