The transfer deadline for Premier League teams is September 1st, which means that Newcastle United still have a few weeks left to bring in some new talent for the 2015 2016 season. As is, it has been a busy Newcastle United summer transfer window 2015 so far, finalizing three fairly large signings, a fourth less expensive arrival, a handful of loans out, and the permanent departures of five different football players. Is there any more to come?
Transfers In
So far, new Magpies manager Steve McClaren has brought four new players to St. James' Park ahead of the 2015 2016 soccer season: midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, forwards Aleksander Mitrovic and Ivan Toney, and defender Chancel Mbemba.
Wijnaldum, who will don the Newcastle United home shirt 2015 2016 this season after having spent four seasons at PSV Eindhoven, is McClaren's most expensive signing of the summer, reportedly commanding a £14.5 million transfer fee.
It's not difficult to see why the 24-year-old was valuable to McClaren, though: in his four seasons at PSV, Wijnaldum made 152 appearances, scored 56 goals, and provided 23 assists. He also became the soccer club's captain at 22, and in 2014 2015, he won the Dutch Footballer of the Year Award. Finally, Wijnaldum has already scored for Newcastle, having netted the second of the squad's two goals in the 2-2 Premier League season opener against Southampton.
In other words, of Newcastle's four signings of the summer, it's easiest to expect big things from Wijnaldum. That's not to say that the rest of the arrivals aren't worth watching, though. McClaren paid a combined £21.5 million to bring Mitrovic and Mbemba to England from RSC Anderlecht, and it will certainly be exciting to see how the two teammates integrate once more when playing football for Newcastle.
Mitrovic-who demanded a £13 million transfer fee-was Anderlecht's top scorer (and the top scorer for the entire Belgian Pro League) in 2014 2015, netting 20 goals in league play and 28 overall. He lost the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year award to Club Brugge's Victor Vazquez, but arguably deserved the performance of the season.
Mbemba, meanwhile, made 28 appearances last year to help Anderlecht finish third in the Belgian Pro League. He'd been with the club since 2012, but made fewer appearances than he might have due to a controversial age discrepancy issue. Still, Mbemba tallied six goals in 63 league fixtures with Anderlecht-an impressive count for a defender-and should only continue to grow at Newcastle.
The last of McClaren's confirmed incoming transfers is Ivan Toney, who arrives from Northampton Town for just £500,000 in fees. Toney is young, just 19 years old, and largely inexperienced, having just started his senior career in Northampton in 2012 after coming up through the youth program there. Still, Toney made 44 overall appearances for the League Two squad last season and scored 10 goals. It's unclear how much play time Toney will get in his first year at St. James' Park, but McClaren has to be hoping to develop the young, promising forward into a high-fee-fetching star.
There are rumors circulating that McClaren is also after Werder Bremen central defender Jannik Vestergaard, Lorient left back Raphael Guerreiro, and QPR forward Charlie Austin.
Transfers and Loans Out
In addition to their growing transfer slate, Newcastle United have also said goodbye to a fair number of
players this summer. Defenders Remie Streete and Ryan Taylor, striker Adam Campbell, and goalkeeper Jak Alnwick all departed St. James' Park on free transfers. 24-year-old full-back Davide Santon also transferred out, heading to Inter Milan on a £3.26 million fee.
Also out for the new season-or at least part of it-are midfielder Sammy Ameobi, forward Adam Armstrong, goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, and defender Shane Ferguson, all of whom will be out on loan for at least a few months.
