Group I
Most of the groups in the qualification circuit for next year's European Championship consist of six teams, making for three head-to-head pairings for every Euro qualifying weekend. Meanwhile, Portugal is a part of the "odd" category: Group I only consists of five teams-including Denmark, Albania, Serbia, and Armenia.
Because they are one country short, Group I leaves one team with no opponent every time there is a qualifying fixture. In other words, prior to the long winter hiatus that spanned from November to this past weekend, most of the teams in Group I had sat out one of the four qualification games played so far. Meanwhile, Denmark had played all four, and were almost by default ranked at the top of the standings.
The wearers of the Portugal football jersey changed that fact on Sunday, March 29th. With Denmark finally sitting a fixture out, the Group I playing field was finally leveled with four games played per club. And the Portuguese side, with a win against the Serbian side, leaped into the lead.
Right now, the Portugal national squad has won three matches and lost one, for a point total of 9. The Danish side, meanwhile, is two points back, having won two games, drawn one, and lost the other. That loss came back in October, when Cristiano Ronaldo and co. donned the Portugal away shirt and dealt Denmark a 1-0 loss.
Serbia
Portugal's qualifier record also includes a September away loss to Albania. However, the country hasn't lost a home contest yet in these qualifiers, and that trend continued with Sunday's soccer match against Serbia.
Indeed, the fans flocking to the Estadio do Sport in Lisboa, clad in the Portugal football jersey, weren't disappointed. Surprisingly, Ronaldo didn't contribute any goals or assists in the match. Instead, the MVPs were center back Ricardo Carvalho and left back Fabio Coentrao.
The two teamed up to give their squad an early lead, with Carvalho taking an assist from Coentrao to score a goal at the 10-minute mark. That lead persisted throughout the first half, and even when the Serbian away side equalized at 61 minutes, the momentum was still with the home side. Just two minutes after the Serbs tied things up, Coentrao found the back of the net once more. His goal gave Portugal the 2-1 lead they needed to win the game and pull into the lead in Group I.
The Next Steps
The victory will also allow Portuguese footballers a chance to relax during the three-month break they now have until their next Euro 2016 qualifier. That match, scheduled for Saturday, June 13th, 2015, will see players donning the Portugal away shirt 2014 2015 to take on Armenia.
Also on the docket for Portugal's 2015 run is a September away fixture with Albania, an October home fixture versus the Danish, and a rematch with the Serbs on October 11th. The latter game will wrap up qualification play and close out the 2014 2015 campaign for the Portuguese squad. In addition, it will (hopefully) leave the team to set their sites on Euro 2016, which begins in France next June.
