The Portugal national football team won't play another match until March of 2015, which means the team's largely lopsided 2014 run is now set in stone in the history books. Indeed, the fortunes of the Portugal football top and the players wearing it have shifted significantly this year, from early World Cup favorite to early elimination and beyond. Luckily, though, their fortunes have seen enough of an uptick in late 2014 to put them in a good place for Euro 2016 qualification as the year draws to a close.
Indeed, the Portuguese football squad is currently in second place in Euro 2016 qualifying Group A. That means that, as long as the national side continues to perform reasonably well in 2015, they will have no problem earning a spot in the upcoming UEFA European Championship! You can support them on that road with a new Portugal home shirt 2014 2015, available for purchase. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will be wearing this soccer top throughout the 2015 qualifying soccer games.
Changing Fortunes
Probably a month before World Cup play began, FIFA slotted Portugal at third place on their world rankings chart. The fact that the squad was near the top of the list at all-let alone in the company of Spain and Germany-showed that there was a lot of faith in the Portuguese soccer squad in the months leading up to the biggest event in soccer.
The reasons behind the good faith could have been numerous. For one thing, the wearers of the Portugal football top had achieved several big wins in friendly fixtures (a 5-1 home victory over Cameroon and a mirror 5-1 away win against Ireland, for instance).
For another thing, Cristiano Ronaldo, the country's star player, was enjoying a great club season at Real Madrid. The striker led the entire La Liga division with 31 goals domestically, and managed 20 additional goals in European and cup play. A similar level of performance at the World Cup would certainly have helped carry Portugal through to the semifinalsÂ… if not beyond.
But then fortunes changed. Ronaldo suffered an injury that left him unable to contribute as much to the Portuguese offense as everyone had predicted. Meanwhile, a tough group stage draw left Portugal fighting for-and ultimately losing-a chance to advance to the knockout stage. Just like that, the red hues of Portugal vanished from Brazil before the tournament even heated up.
Better Days
The early World Cup elimination was a tough pill to swallow for fans of the Portuguese national football side. They weren't the only country to underperform in Brazil in 2014: Spain was also eliminated after the group stage, losing the chance to defend their title from 2010.
Still, while Portugal was in good company, it took a little while for the squad to build back up any measure of confidence. In September, they lost their first Euro 2016 qualifying match against Albania, and at home no less. It was not one of the proudest moments to be a fan in the Portugal football top.
Luckily, though, better days were on the way. As European Championship qualification continued, the team found its groove, winning both an away match against Denmark (with a last-minute goal from Cristiano Ronaldo), as well as a home game against Armenia.
2015 PlayÂ
When qualifying rounds reconvene in March 2015, Cristiano and his fellow players will don the Portugal home shirt 2014 2015 for a fixture against Serbia. Serbia is the only team in Group A that the Portuguese side has not played yet. However, since the Serbians are currently ranked fourth out of five teams in the group, a win shouldn't be hard for Portugal-especially in a home fixture.
