Real Madrid staved off the competition this past weekend, winning 2-0 in a home match against Deportivo La Coruna in order to remain four points ahead on the 2014 2015 La Liga standings table. The victory comes a week after the most crushing loss of the season for the Vikings, a 0-4 beat-down

Leading up to the rivalry fixture with Atletico's Mattress Makers, Real Madrid had one of the most bulletproof 2014 2015 season records in all of European football. After two negative outcomes in the first three weeks of competitive play (an away defeat against Real Sociedad, and an at-home upset from Atletico), the Vikings strung together a hugely impressive winning streak.
Indeed, after those two early-season losses, the wearers of the Real Madrid shirt won every single one of their La Liga matches until 2015. That meant 12 consecutive in-league wins throughout September, October, November, and December. A January 4th loss, dealt by Valencia, cut the club's winning streak off just nine days shy of the four-month mark, but it was still a glorious run.
In the wake of that Valencia game, it looked as if the Vikings were going to string together another winning streak-perhaps to span the rest of the season! On January 31st, players even donned the Real Madrid home jersey 2014 2015 for a rematch against Sociedad-and won 4-1 for some satisfying revenge.
Unfortunately for fans of Cristiano Ronaldo and company, the club couldn't manage a similar outcome against their biggest rivals. Even with the home field advantage, the pressure of the Atletico Madrid match seemed to stifle all of the momentum that the Real soccer squad has been building this season.
Indeed, the Mattress Makers were in the driver's seat for the entirety of the February 7th fixture. Not only did they score first, but they also quickly took a two-point lead: goals at the 14 and 18-minute marks immediately gave the Real Madrid home side a deficit to overcome.
As it turned out, "overcome" wasn't in the Viking vocabulary at that particular home game. The Atletico defense shut down every attack Real tried to make, and while the remainder of the first half was scoreless, the football match was still locked at 0-2 come halftime. Another scoreless 45 minutes in the second half-plus two more goals for the Mattress Makers-finished out the game at 0-4.
For fans in the Real Madrid shirt, the loss was easily the most disappointing moment of the 2014 2015 season so far. Not only had the defeat come at home, but it was also the second failure of the season against Atletico. And even though Real Madrid is still significantly ahead of the Mattress Makers on the 2014 2015 La Liga standings table, the double defeat continues to sting.
Deportivo La Coruna
The Vikings were in much finer form this past Saturday, donning the Real Madrid home jersey 2014 2015 for the second weekend in a row-this time for a battle with Deportivo La Coruna. Real beat Deportivo 8-2 when the two teams faced each other in the fall, so this was a great fixture to help the football club find its feet after a demoralizing failure.
This game was a lot more low-key than the aforementioned six-point victory. However, zero points for La Coruna, and a pair of goals for Madrid (from Isco and Benzema, respectively), still made the football fixture an easy win for the home team.
