Polish soccer sensation Robert Lewandowski excels at the start of 2015 - 2016 league play, he has always been a very good player but has truly dominated headlines so far this season. In 2013 2014, he was the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 20 goals. He's been a part of three Bundesliga titles, including two with Borussia Dortmund and one with Bayern Munich. And he's been named the "Polish Footballer of the Year" for four years running. After a massive start to the 2015 2016 season, though, it looks as though the 27-year-old striker could ascend to Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo levels of greatness this year. Could a Ballon d'Or nomination be in his future?
The 2015 2016 Season so Far
Consider this: in 2014 2015, Robert Lewandowski, along with Arjen Robben, led Bayern Munich to the
Bundesliga title. The two players tied for second on the list of the league's most prolific scorers, both with 17 points. Lewandowski scored his goals over the course of 31 league appearances and added another eight points in Bayern's cup and continental campaigns. His final tally for the football season was 25 goals in 49 appearances.
In the 2015 2016 season, Lewandowski has already scored 14 goals, and he's done it in just eight appearances. Ten of those goals have come in Bundesliga play, where Lewandowski is leading the field in goal count. Only Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyong is anywhere close to him, with nine goals. Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Muller, meanwhile, is in third, having scored six goals in league play so far.
Landmark Matches
Lewandowski hasn't just been pulling down goals, though. On the contrary, he's had a few truly landmark matches, and they should at least earn him a modicum of consideration from Ballon d'Or voters come the end of the year.
For instance, Lewandowski's game-changing, record-breaking performance in Bayern's September 22nd match against Wolfsburg isn't something that anyone is going to forget. Lewandowski wasn't even in the starting lineup for the midweek match, and the score was drawn at 0-0 at halftime. But when Robert came on at the 46-minute mark, subbing in for Thiago Alcantara, he almost single-handedly turned the match from a stalemate into a blowout.
Between the 51-minute mark and the 60-minute mark, Lewandowski scored a jaw-dropping five goals. It only took the Polish attacker eight minutes and 59 seconds to do it, which set numerous records for the Bundesliga. Not only is Robert now the highest-scoring substitute in league history, but he also scored the fastest hat trick ever in the Bundesliga (four minutes), as well as the fastest five-goal streak.
It's early in the season yet, but it's difficult to imagine any player-even high-scoring stalwarts like Messi and Ronaldo-topping Lewandowski's expectation-defying performance in that September 22nd match. The fact that Wolfsburg are themselves formidable opponents (they finished second in
the Bundesliga last season) made the rapid-fire five-goal flurry that much more impressive.
Just four days later, on September 26th, Robert broke another record. With a pair of goals in Bayern's 3-0 victory against Mainz 05, he netted his 100th and 101st Bundesliga goals. Between his stints at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, Lewandowski has now reached the 100-goal mark in the Bundesliga faster than any other non-German football player in history.
Add the hat trick the Lewandowski netted in Bayern Munich's September 29th Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb (the German champs won the game 5-0), and there's no question that the Polish soccer star is enjoying a banner season so far. Can he keep it up and lead Bayern Munich to a historic fourth consecutive Bundesliga title? Better yet, can his huge year help the Bavarians reclaim the Champions League this season? And if Robert continues to play like he did in September, could he potentially be on the shortlist for the 2015 Ballon d'Or Award?
