Who will reach the finals for the 2014 2015 UEFA Europa League? Will La Liga veterans Sevilla take the honor, or will it be Italian club Fiorentina? If the first Sevilla V Fiorentina Europa League semifinal match offers any indication, then Spain will have a presence at the upcoming UEL championship match, scheduled for May 27th. The Red and Whites bested Fiorentina's Lilies 3-0, with a strong performance from midfielder Aleix Vidal paving the way for the victory.
Not that anything is decided just yet. The Lilies will get a chance for payback on May 14th, when they don the Fiorentina home shirt 2014 2015 for the second semifinal leg. They'll have the home field advantage on their side as they try to earn a spot in their first Europa League final since 1990. However, they will also have their work cut out for them, as making up a three-point deficit in the aggregate will surely be no easy task.
Sevilla's UEL Legacy
Fiorentina will also be facing off against a Sevilla squad that, after Thursday's semifinal leg, is on fire with momentum and excitement. Not only did the Red and Whites win the first leg of the semifinals-and in decisive fashion, no less-but they are also looking to defend the UEL title for the second time in a decade.
Previously, the wearers of the Sevilla soccer shirt won the Europa League in 2006 and then defended it in 2007. The squad won their third title tournament last year, beating Benfica in the championship match. If they can successfully defend their title once more, they will win their fourth UEL title in a decade-and become the first football club to ever with the Europa League on four separate occasions.
Fiorentina, meanwhile, have never won the UEL. They finished as runners-up in 1990, losing in the championship match to fellow Italian squad, Juventus.
The First Leg
Still, even if the Lilies had the disadvantage in terms of both home field and Europa League clout, the first semifinal leg was not a one-sided match. On the contrary, Fiorentina controlled possession of the ball for more than half the match, and fired off a number of on-target or near-miss shots. But a strong performance from Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico left the Lilies scoreless, and a dynamite performance from an unexpected source put the host team on top.
That unexpected source was Sevilla winger Aleix Vidal, who took the field on Thursday as a right back, but played like his team's star striker. Vidal delivered the first two goals of the soccer match to do the Sevilla football jersey proud, and then provided an assist to forward Kevin Gameiro for the third and final goal of the game.
High Stakes
Will the Lilies be able to strike back next Thursday, when they don the Fiorentina home shirt 2014 2015 for the second semifinal leg?
So far in the knockout stages of the 2014 2015 UEL, Fiorentina have performed considerably better in the second leg of the round than in the first. In the round of 32, they drew the first leg with Tottenham Hotspur at 1-1, but won the second 2-0. A similar thing happened against Roma in the round of 16 (a 1-1 draw in match one, and a 3-0 win in match two), as well as against Dynamo Kyiv (a 1-1 draw away, and a 2-0 win at home).
Still, even if the Lilies perform better when the pressure is one, they have only had to break a tied aggregate in the previous four rounds-not overcome an 0-3 deficit. With that said, the stakes are very high this time around. These soccer teams aren't just competing for a place in the 2014 2015 UEL finals, or even just for a UEFA title. The winner of the football tournament also qualifies for next year's Champion's League, and since neither Sevilla nor Fiorentina are likely to qualify based on their domestic league performances, their last opportunity is here.
