Given that they are such a new team, most football fans are surprised that Slovenia is doing as well as it is for itself. Aside from its eclectic soccer record, this history of the Slovenian national football team is as tumultuous as Slovenia's own history.  Formed relatively recently as far as national teams go, Slovenia has worked through bumps and hiccups to form a squad that has proven itself a force to be reckoned with.

A Team Is Born

The Slovenian national team was born from the splintering of Slovenia, Croatia, and Yugoslavia in the early '90s. After only just a year of recovery from a civil war, Slovenia played its first FIFA regulated football game on February 3 1992 against Estonia, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Much to fan's adulation, Slovenia followed with their Estonian rivals in 93' when they secured their first international victory against the same team they played in their first ever international appearance.

The team's first coach was Bojan Prašnikar, who retired after leading his team to victory against Estonia. He was replaced by Coach Zdenko Verdenik who took Slovenia's national team to their first ever major tournament; the UEFA Euro 96 in England, where the team proudly wore their classic Puma kit on the international stage. Now you can purchase your very own Slovenia soccer jersey in just a few minutes with a trip to the Soccer Box shop, where you can find all kinds of Slovenia national team merchandise for sale at an affordable price.

The early 2000s were a tumultuous time for fans of Slovenia.  In the 2002 World Cup qualifying rounds, the young team surprised the world by going undefeated for 12 games straight, tallying up 6 wins and 6 draws against Romania and securing its spot in the 2002 Cup.

Unfortunately for the team, their upstart success in international football would be short lived, losing all three of their first matches in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea, which sealed their fate for the next 8 years, only to return and surprise the world again in 2010. But as always, fans wear the Slovenia home jersey 2014 - 2015 with pride and for good reason.

A Steadfast Fan Favorite

The 2010 World Cup saw fans of Slovenia turning out in droves to support their team during their biggest season yet. During the qualifiers, Slovenia went up against Slovakia, securing their first two wins, as well as a draw with the 2010 Polish powerhouse team. After a win in a repeat game against Poland, the team donned the notorious zigzag football jerseys again and packed up to head to South Africa for their biggest tournament ever. Now you can have a Slovenia home jersey 2014 - 2015 or away jersey for yourself to show your pride in this team.

When they got to the games, Slovenia was pitted against such titanic teams as England, Algeria and the USA. They produced yet another hat-trick win against Algeria, drew even against America, but lost 0-1 to England, which lead to their elimination from the games.

The story of the fabled Slovenian national team is still developing, and though they may not be headed to Brazil to compete in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, you can bet that the surprisingly talented squad of Slovenians will keep up their A-game, and who knows, with enough support from their fans, they might surprise everyone yet again in 2016.
