2013 - 2014 a Season to Forget

Unfortunately, the strong, dominating Barcelona squad that has won so many trophies lost 1-0 and the chance of European success this year.

 Copa del Rey Misery

To rub salt into the wounds of the team and fans, last nights Copa del Rey final added further disappointment. In another El Classico of 2014 Barcelona and Real Madrid met at the Nou Camp to contest this year's Copa del Rey trophy. The match will be recorded as one of the highlights of the 2013 - 2014 season, but for the fans sporting the Barcelona soccer jersey it will be a night to forget.

Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria opened the scoring after just 11 minutes, putting Barcelona on the back-foot. It took until the 68th minute for Barcelona to draw level, through a goal from Bartra. The game remained at stalemate with the unappetizing prospect of extra time and penalties to come.

Bale, Real Madrid's star signing, had other ideas. With just 5 minutes to go he displayed a magnificent run, shunning the opportunity of a free kick after being fouled, and neatly placed the ball in the back of the net. Bale proved he was worth his £85 million transfer fee with what may be described as one if the best goals this season. Neymar was presented with an open goal several minutes later but hit the post, sealing Barcelona's fate.

The Barcelona players miserably left the pitch as the elated Real Madrid team celebrated into the night. The Barcelona home kit will not feature in the final rounds of the 2013 - 2014 UEFA Champions League, and it seems increasingly unlikely that the team will lift this years La Liga. Many of the players will be tied up with World Cup duties over the coming months, but a serious re-grouping will be necessary prior to next seasons La Liga and European campaigns if the team is to contest for these major trophies.
