USA Unlucky in the End

Yesterday was an intense day of Group G football; the day began and ended with Germany and USA at the top of the group. Germany only managed to hold Ghana to a 2-2 draw giving the USA the incentive to win, top the group and ensure their place at the knockout stage. However, Portugal was in a tougher predicament facing a certain early trip home if they failed to score any points.

As such, Portugal started strong. Nani wearing the number 17 Portugal football jersey hit the net only 5 minutes into the game giving the impression that they would be the dominant force throughout the 90 minutes. However, the game didn't quite play out that way. In the humidity of the Manaus Amazonian stadium the Portuguese team struggled, allowing the USA to seize possession of the ball.

The USA took possession and looked strong, making several shots on goal that were hastily cleared by the Portugal defense. At halftime the score remained 1-0 but the 2nd half held much more excitement for the fans. The team wearing the USA 2014 World Cup home jersey came out looking strong, after several more attempts on goal Jones finally netted an equalizer on the 64th minute.

Portugal upped the pace to create a truly mesmerizing final 30 minutes. Clint Dempsey the USA captain was determined for the win and put his team ahead at the 81st minute. The team and fans were all ready to celebrate their victory and advancement to the Round of 16 but it seems that Portugal were not ready to give up and go home just yet.

The Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo provided a simply breathtaking cross in the 95th minute of match play that was neatly put into the net by Varela. The game ended 2-2 giving hope to Portugal, and ultimately a feeling of disappointment to the USA who should and could of won the game.

More Excitement to Come

With both Group G games ending in a draw all 4 teams have it to play for in the final group stage matches that will be played on Thursday 26th June. The USA will face Germany; if the game ends in a draw both teams will secure qualification to the next round. If either team wins there will be the opportunity for either Portugal or Ghana to steal 2nd place and progression to the next round.

Portugal will face Ghana and the odds are not stacked in their favor. If the Portugal football jersey is to appear in the later rounds the team needs to beat Ghana by a good margin to overcome their -4 goal difference. If either the USA or Germany win 2nd place will go down to goal difference and -4 is putting Portugal in last place after 2 games.
