It is expected that the Eredivisie league will grow and flourish during upcoming seasons. As with other leagues around Europe revenues from sponsorship and advertising is growing enabling more competition in the transfer market. Rupert Murdoch has bought the rights to the league for 12 years, and this should provide the biggest clubs with additional income of around €5 million per season.
About the Dutch Eredivisie
The top flight of football in the Netherlands is the Dutch Eredivisie league. This league is contested between the top 18 teams in Holland, each plays the others twice once at home and once away. The winning team claims the Dutch National Championship, and the bottom teams are pitted against the top teams in the second tier of Dutch football in a play-off style tournament to decide who is relegated and/or promoted.
The Eredivisie was founded in 1956, following the professionalization of football in the Netherlands in 1954. Prior to this football was played in regions, and the Dutch National Championship winning team was decided following a play-off between the winners of each region. Three teams have dominated the history of football in Holland, and these are of course Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. In terms of Dutch National Championship titles these three teams have claimed 33, 23 and 14 respectively.
Members of the League
Since the introduction of the Eredivisie league Ajax has won on 25 occasions with PSV claiming 20 titles and Feyenoord following closely behind on 10. The most recent win went to Feyenoord and prior to this, PSV won the title. Over the past decade the three top teams have dominated the league, however 2010/2009 saw Twente and AZ Alkmaar win the titles.
Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord are the only team from the Dutch Eredivisie football league to have had any success in European competition. Between these three teams there have been wins in the European Cup/Champions League and UEFA Cup amongst other successes.
