The very first Ajax home shirt was actually black with a red sash tied around the players’ waist, a novel idea for the modern football fan. This colour scheme was soon swapped to a red and white vertical striped top teamed with black shorts. It is clear to see that red, black and white have always been proudly in the teams history, this is because they reflect the colours of the Amsterdam flag.
Changing styles of the Ajax Kit
In 1911, when this fine club was first promoted to the top-flight of Dutch football, they were forced to change their strip again. Another outfit, Sparta Rotterdam, already used the same colour scheme as they did. As no change or away kit existed in the early 1900’s the rules were that the newly promoted club had to change their kit if it was the same as another clubs already established within the league.
It was at this time that the directors chose to wear a white shirt when playing at home featuring a wide red stripe placed vertically down the front and back. This now iconic jersey was teamed with white football shorts. This design and colours are well-known and loved by fans around the globe, and are easily recognisable as the strip of this top Dutch team.
With Adidas as the kit manufacturer since 2000 the jerseys, shorts and socks have maintained a consistent look that has been tweaked and modernized to offer the team and fans a slightly altered look each season. Changing the neckline of the jersey has been a frequent factor in differentiating between each season’s look. And in 2016/17 Adidas switched their iconic 3-stripes from the shoulders to the flanks of their jerseys creating a totally new style.
From 1934-1996 AFC Ajax Amsterdam played their fixtures at the De Meer Stadium. Quickly, it became apparent that this football ground wasn’t large enough to fulfill demand for fans wanting watch games, and the players often played at the Olympisch Stadium instead.
