History of the Iconic Colour Scheme

Established just over 50 years ago, the club is still relatively young compared to other clubs in the Ligue 1. Unlike other teams, PSG has managed to settle on a set colour scheme for their home gear almost instantaneously. This quick solidification on colouring means that they have been able to build their brand into a highly recognizable colour palette worldwide.

The red, white and blue colouring has two meanings, allegiance with the French flag as well as the blue and red signifying Paris and the white representing Saint-Germain-en-Laye. To begin with the shirts were primarily red with blue and white accents but as of 1973 they featured their now iconic ‘Hechter’ pattern which sees a blue jersey decorated with a red and white stripe down the centre. This came into effect as a result of the French designer Daniel Hechter who took over as president of the club and redesigned the kit.

Over the years the ‘Hechter shirt’ has been modernized and adapted by kit manufacturer Nike, to keep up with the latest trends while still maintaining their classic template. Some of the most notable launches are listed below:

• 1995/96: brighter blue with wide red centre stripe and narrow white stripes. Interesting faux v-shaped neckline with red insert playing host to the Nike Swoosh and three stars. 
• 2001/02: navy blue with red vertical stripe to the left. Turn down collar with open neckline and white trim. Nike and sponsor logos both in white, with full colour crest.
• 2007/08: classic ‘Hechter shirt’ with striking v-shaped neckline and red collar, the sleeve cuffs also include red detailing. Nike Swoosh, Fly Emirates logo and club crest adorn the front.
• 2017/18: navy with thin red central stripe. The unique feature of this jersey is the deep red raglan sleeves and back yoke, the design is made up by combining tiny red and navy detailing. 
• 2018/19: a modern play on the iconic centre stripe by combining a navy base with a transitional design forming a red stripe with no clear edges.

Parc des Princes

Where Paris Saint-Germain has resided since 1972, the site of Parc des Princes has an interesting history. When it was first opened in 1872 it was called the Stade Velodrome du Parc des Princes and was an area of parkland that was used by the royal family prior to the French Revolution. In 1900 the UCI Track Cycling World Championships were held there and since then the area was used for national football matches, rugby, racing and the 1924 Summer Olympics. In 1932 the arena was expanded and 6 years later hosted the opening match of the World Cup.

From 1972 Paris Saint-Germain called Parc des Princes its home. Due to the compact nature of the seating and venue, it was known as ‘caisse de resonnance’ meaning ‘box of sound’ as the cheering from the fans was amplified, filling the stadium.  

Since moving in, the stadium has been renovated twice in 1998 and ahead of Euro 2016. The current capacity is 47,929. There are plans in place to expand this again to make the stadium a 60,000 all-seated venue.

The very early days the team play their matches at a variety of different venues, prior to making Parc des Princes their home. Some of these venues were:

• Stade Municipal Georges Lefèvre
• Stade Jean-Bouin
• Stade Bauer
