Establishing Chicago Fire

The Chicago soccer team was founded in 1997, and the date that the club was formed coincided with the anniversary of the Great Fire of 1871. Therefore, the team decided to name the club after this momentous event in history which affected Chicago greatly.

During their first season together, the team won the U.S Open Cup and the MLS Cup which was an outstanding achievement for the newly formed club. They then went on to winning the U.S Open cup a further three times and also the Supporters’ Shield too in 2003. Below we can see the breakdown of all of the Men in Red’s achievements:

  • U.S Open Cup Winners – 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006
  • MLS Cup Winners – 1998
  • Supporters’ Shield Winners – 2003

Currently Chicago Fire’s home grounds are SeatGeek Stadium as of 2006. Prior to this, they called two other stadiums home – Soldier Field (98-01, 03-05) and Cardinal Stadium (02-03). Up until 2018 the SeatGeek Stadium was called Toyota Park; this change of name was made as Toyota opted to not renew their naming rights on the stadium in 2016. But despite this announcement, the arena continued to be under the name Toyota Park until SeatGeek purchased the naming rights of the venue to start as of 2019.

Within the stands of this 20,000 seater stadium you are guaranteed to see a united front of all supporters donning the signature red, blue and white jerseys. So why not shop through our collection of official Chicago Fire shirts today and kit yourself out ready for the upcoming MLS fixtures.

Previous Manufacturers of the Chicago Fire Kit

Throughout their 20 years playing in the MLS, Chicago Fire has worked with a number of sportswear brands to produce their primary and secondary kits. Their longest standing collaboration at the moment of writing is with Adidas who they have partnered with for over 13 continuous years.  Here is the breakdown of the manufacturers who have made the Chicago Fire Soccer Club jerseys, shorts, socks and strips:

  • Nike – 1998 to 2002
  • Puma – 2003 to 2005
  • Adidas – 2006 to present

Colours of the Chicago Fire Jerseys

Since the beginning, Chicago Fire has worn red and white for their primary kit but over time they have experimented with the addition of blue and black too. This colouring palette was chosen as it best represents the appearance of the Chicago fireman’s coat and they also introduced stripes across the front of the jersey to match it further. However, when they partnered with Nike they wanted to call the team Chicago Rhythm and have them wear turquoise, black and green with an emblem of a cobra. But after privately visiting Adrenalin Inc. they came up with the fire services concept. And as of 2012 they started to introduce blue into the colour palette for the primary Chicago Fire jersey.

Contrasting against their bright and bold red home jersey, their secondary strip started off with a monochrome colour scheme. This meant that the shirts were mainly black with the addition of the white stripe across the chest seen on the primary top. Although, this design evolved over the years as the club and manufacturers experimented with the introduction of navy, sky blue and red into the appearance of the away sportswear range. They also have a third collection which features yellow as its main colouring. But in 2015 their third jersey sported a light sky blue colour which was inspired by the Municipal Flag of Chicago, however this colouring was short lived after they swapped to Adidas.

As well as the evolution of the sportswear, the crest has also seen a revamp over the years. Originally the emblem was blue with a navy outline and a fire truck in the centre with the Chicago Fire wording around it in grey. However, in 2006 this was updated to Florian’s cross seen in the previous crest with the six points of the Municipal flag of Chicago in white within it. And in the centre of this base graphic is the C monogram in red with the Chicago Fire wording placed in the top and bottom sections of the cross in grey.
