History of the Portuguese League

The Primeira Liga was first established in 1934, but didn’t become official until 1938. Since the leagues inception seventy clubs have competed for the right to be named Portuguese football champions, however, only five clubs have ever lifted the trophy. Benfica leads the way with 35 titles, Porto has 27 and Sporting CP has 18. The only other teams to have ever won the top-flight title in Portugal are Belenenses who won in 1946, and Boavista who scooped the title in 2001.

The rivalry between Primeira Liga ‘Big 3’ is intense, and motivates each team to improve and succeed. Fixtures between any of these teams are intensely competitive with players, club staff, and supporters vying for the win and vital points toward the Championship title and spots in European competition. In terms of European competition each of the ‘Big 3’ have had success. However, FC Porto stands out as the most successful with two Champions League and two Europa League titles. Their most recent success was in the 2011 Europa League.
