In many Asian countries the most popular sport is football, locally referred to as soccer. But football in Asia is not as well developed as in other confederations, including that of Africa. An Asian national team first qualified for the World Cup in 1938, that was Indonesia and to date remains their only appearances at the world’s most prestigious football tournament.

2002 was the pinnacle of success so far in World Cup history for the AFC. South Korea and Japan jointly hosted the 2002 World Cup, Japan reached the Round of 16, and South Korea wowed the world with a 4th place finish. Going into the tournament they had never even won a World Cup game, and being knocked out in the semi-finals by Germany losing 0-1 was almost as good as winning first place.

Currently the AFC is allotted 4 places in the final 32 for World Cup competition. These have been primarily dominated by South Korea and Japan since 1998, with relatively frequent appearances from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Japan is also a strong contender in the women’s game securing 1st place in the 2011 Women’s World Cup, and 2nd at the 2015 incarnation of the tournament.

Although their performance hasn’t been the strongest against the big teams in the World Cup, they aren’t without successes. They also take part in a regular Asian Cup whereby AFC national teams compete for a trophy against one another. Included in this game are Australia, Iraq and Israel who have all achieved first place once. However, the following teams have lifted the trophy more than once:

• Japan – 1992, 2000, 2004, 2011
• Iran – 1968, 1972, 1976
• Saudi Arabia – 1984, 1988, 1996
• South Korea – 1956, 1960
