Iconic Chelsea Home Kit Colours
When you think of Chelsea, you instantly picture a bold blue jersey. But did you know that their signature royal blue colouring hasn’t always been their staple style? The first ever jersey was a paler shade called ‘Eton’ and was worn from 1905 to 1912. Just after then, is when the classic royal colour was introduced and it has stuck ever since.
In addition to the evolution of the Chelsea home soccer shirts colouring, the accessories have also changed their appearance over time too. The first bottoms worn for matches at Stamford Bridge were navy and paired with black knee highs and as of the 1960s they changed to their iconic blue bottoms and white knee high combination that is now a classic part of the team's symbolism.
Design of the Chelsea Home Shirts
Even though the main colouring of the jersey has remained consistent over the years, the styling and appearance of the gear has been altered and modernized a multitude of times. This has been done so that the club can keep up with the latest sportswear trends and manufacturer templates. A constant change in look year on year is what makes supporters eager to pick up the latest apparel as fans love to be matching to their idols. However, you will often find that due to the rise in different styles of Chelsea home kits, supporters will also opt for a retro football top too. Below we take a look at some of the most iconic strips for the club and explore why they stand out:
- 1983/85: Manufactured by Le Coq Sportif, this two-toned base feature a gold horizontal pin stripe pattern and faux colour block V-shaped neck. Completed with red and white trims.
- 1989/91: Produced by Umbro, this two-toned diamond graphic jersey features a red and white trim on the collar and small placket.
- 1997/99: Navy jersey with subtle vertical stripe pattern with white undersleeve and flank panels. Features oversized white collar and V-shaped neck outlined with yellow and navy.
- 2006/08: This sleek royal jersey is the first Adidas collaboration. Containing modern rounded neck and collar with white piping on the shoulders, neck and hems for a unique, premium appearance.
- 2019/20: Created by Nike, this royal jersey is overlaid with a navy graphic that merges each end of the team’s Stamford Bridge stadium to form a unique and patriotic look.
In addition to the iconic blue strip, we also stock the more abstract and daring strips that offer a greater variation in colour and pattern. To shop the Chelsea away, third and goalie styles, you can browse their dedicated pages here at Soccer Box. You can also find a selection of retro attire for the club on our site too which are perfect to add to your match-day wardrobe along with a variety of training wear to complement your core gear.
Customizing the Chelsea Jersey
For adult supporters you have the option of purchasing either the home Vapor jerseys or the home Stadium top. Both options are authentic sportswear supplied to us by Nike. The Vapor style is more expensive and is an exact replica of the gear worn by the footballers on match days. They include advanced moisture management zonal technology and offer a more fitted style for ultimate performance. The cheaper stadium shirts are the classic option bought by fans for many years, they look the same visually as the vapor, but offers a more comfortable, relaxed fit. Dri-Fit moisture management is also used on the replica kits, to perfectly suit the needs of supporters cheering on the team or having a friendly kick-about.
Like with the adults, we also stock Chelsea junior stadium jerseys which are the spitting image of the player apparel and contain expert moisture wicking properties. In addition to this, we also stock the coordinating clothing too. On our site you willl also find that we offer a full strip for younger supporters that are produced in ages 0 to 8 years - older children 8+ will need the separates. We also stock infant clothing up to 24 months to make sure supporters of all ages can don the matching gear to their idols.
You can also opt to have your Chelsea FC home jersey customized with official Premier League lettering and/or sleeve patches. These services incur a small additional fee. For express dispatch, all personalisations are completed to order by our in-house professionals. As we stock the full alphabet you can choose a player name and squad number or choose your own name for an ultra-personalised look. Remember to check all spellings before completing your purchase as mistakes cannot be rectified after printing.
Stamford Bridge Stadium
Unlike many other teams whose ground is a storied history of changing stadiums, CFC have only ever played at Stamford Bridge. This long-shared history between club and ground mean that players, management and fans all share a deep-rooted sentimentality about the land it stands on.
Below we take a brief look at some of the history and highlights at Stamford Bridge:
- Opened 1877
- Renovated 1904/05 and 1998
- CFC Stamford Bridge ground 1905-present
- Highest recorded domestic match attendance 82,905 (1935)
- Today’s capacity 41,631
In recent years the club has laid out plans to both refurbish the Bridge into a 60,000 seat stadium and also made bids for other pieces of land with a view to starting anew with a brand new ground. However, as of May 2018 there are no current plans to do either. There was permission agreed to renovate the current site to allow for the larger capacity but due to economic forecasts neither option is currently viewed as viable.
The smaller size of the ground means that there are less tickets available for each game, and many supporters never get the opportunity to watch the players live in action. If you are lucky enough to attend a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge, share your pictures and memories with us on social media we love hearing from other passionate football supporters.
